Guardian: Warner transmits film to Japan via fibre optics
Warner Bros has made history by successfully completing the digital transmission of a film from California to Japanese theatres via fibre optics. The studio, arguably the most technologically savvy of all the US majors, announced the results of a test transmission of Tim Burton's Corpse Bride into three sites owned by Japanese company Toho. The digital files sent from the Warner Bros lot in Burbank complied with industry specifications recently established by the Digital Cinemas Initiative (DCI). The move is a significant development because DCI, a consortium of studios and digital cinema advocates, was set up more than three years ago to save studios physical distribution costs, print costs, and offer a safeguard against piracy.
