Yomiuri: Restaurant menu calorie information 'wrong'
On May 12, Skylark reportedly was asked by a customer whether the calories displayed in its menu were correct. According to the Tokyo-based restaurant operator, a Tokyo man ordered a large serving of french fries, which the home-delivery menu said contained 253 calories. The man told Skylark officials that he placed the order because of the lower calories because he was diabetic and on a diet, but felt sick after eating the fries. Following the complaint, Skylark asked the Japan Food Research Laboratories to calculate the caloric value of the fries. The institution made fries under the same conditions they were made by the restaurant and measured 644.8 calories...The correct calorie content of processed food must be displayed under the health promotion law. However, the restaurant industry has no such regulations other than the guidelines for nutrition and ingredient listings.
