Short, skinny, and obsessed with cute, the Japanese really are forever young
metropolis.japantoday.com / Nov 18, 2005 "Last Word" by C. B. Liddell
General Douglas MacArthur famously said that Japan was a nation of 12-year-olds.....So, what the heck was MacArthur talking about? Whether he knew it or not, he was probably talking about neoteny.
Neoteny is a biological term that describes the retention of juvenile characteristics in adults, something that is widely recognized in the animal world.....
Now, many of the physical characteristics we associate with the Japanese are also characteristics we associate with children: smoother, less hairy skin; lack of physical stature; slenderness; less voluptuous curves in women; large head-to-body ratio; flatter faces; and higher pitched voices. Very few people would argue with the idea that the Japanese are cuter than most other races....more...

Mr Kobayashi: First, I experienced a sort of overpowering feeling whenever I was in the room with foreigners, not to mention a powerful body odor coming from them. I don't know whether it was a sweat from the heat or a cold sweat, but I remember I was sweating whenever they were around.

You forgot the moral to the story:

J-Girls are cute! It's a scientific fact that J-Girls are cute and that is why we like them more than girls back home!

Hail to kawaii!
Check out what I think you gaijins should be doing when you get to Japan at http://www.tokyoessentials.com ! Cum on, DO IT, I know you want to...

He's probably wrong, but I must admit, Japanese girls have an annoying habit of looking like they're 16 when they're actually far beyond that.
Why do the Japanese always have to have a favorite saying?

I can see how that would annoy you when you are looking to "date" a 16-year-old girl.

I read the article, and the guy sounds really stupid. BUT, I must admit that I think he's (despite himself) right. Only he lacks the real research to back up his argument.

Very sterotypical, but as mentioned above, the majority of girls here do seem cute/young. I much prefer my J-girl over any girl back home :)

I saw a chick in the bar the other night that was uglier than a mud fence. I guess that disproves his theory right there! Of course just purely in the interest of research and after a few pints, I asked her to dance.

Lacking the proof or research to back up your argument is just the same as talking out of your ass.

So. let's define 'cute'?

Edit: Aww fuck it - I don't really care. This guy is a tool.

[floatr]Image[/floatr]CNN: Cuteness Counts (At the end of the transcript)
Cute is cornering the market in this age of ads on every cyber site and cell phone. The demand for cute cars, cute haircuts, cute characters, cute cuticles is steaming. And so scientists are scheming to find out why cute counts so much...[R]esearchers have found...cuteness cues work between species too. That's why humans love pandas, piglets, kittens, even some cartoons. We see in round heads and big eyes the same things that make us care for our kids...University of Wisconsin researchers scanned the brains of mothers looking at their babies and found the pleasure centers lit up. So it's no wonder that in virtually all mammals, including people, some adults that look cute also act a little young...Mathematicians long ago established that specific mathematical ratios dominate the faces of people we call pretty. And some suspect cute can be measured too...That's the trick and the trap of cuteness...We'd like to cuddle a koala, ignoring its nasty bite. And, we tuck our kids in with facsimiles of the continent's largest carnivores. Call it foolish, call it instinct, but survival of the cutest goes on.

This story seems like it's a great one for journalists. You can trot it out anytime. This one reports the view that Japan's destiny depends on what happens to cute culture:

CBS: Cuteness a Hot-Selling Commodity in Japan
Cute is cool in Japan. Look anywhere and everywhere: Cartoon figures dangle from cell phones, waitresses bow in frilly maid outfits, cherries and bows adorn bags, even police departments boast cuddly mascots. These days, Japan Inc., known in the past for more serious products like Toyota cars and the Sony Walkman, is busy exporting the epitome of cute - bubble-headed Hello Kitty, Pokemon video games, the Tamagotchi virtual pet, just to name a few...Cute-worship is gaining such overseas acceptance it's rapidly becoming Japan's global image...Ryoko Sato, a Japanese artist, shrugs off much of pop culture as empty fluff and seeks to delve deeper through works like "The Kiss." The photo of a skinned mouse next to its furry hide is a statement on how cute is as skin-deep as cruelty or ugliness...more...

Must have been an empty news day at CBS. Hello Kitty was been around since about 1976 if that is our gage for insipid cuteness.

Without any shadow of a doubt, J-Girls are the cutest on earth. Malay-Chinese have better bone structure, Thai's have better personalities but J-Girls have the money to look cuter than all of them.

However, on my last trip to Tokyo i pulled 1 Japanese, 2 American, 1 Dutch and 4 Australian, for some reason i am irresistable to white women in Asia. (but not at home)

If you wanna pull really attractive white women, go to Tokyo or Singapore. FACT

Why in two such game preserves abounding in game and with me suffering from advanced YBF, would I want to even consider that?

In Japan, Debate Takes a Cute Turn
Image
http://edition.cnn.com/2006/WORLD/asiapcf/06/17/cute.japan.ap/index.html
But the obsession with things cute -- or "Kawaii" (pronounced Ka-wuh-EEH) in Japanese -- has the world's second biggest economy doing some soul-searching, wondering what exactly is making its people gravitate so frantically toward cuteness. A big reason for the emerging debate: Cute-worship is gaining such overseas acceptance it's rapidly becoming Japan's global image...

Skeptics here say Japan's pursuit of cute is a sign of an infantile mentality and worry that Japanese culture -- historically praised for exquisite understatement as sparse rock gardens and woodblock prints -- may be headed toward doom.

Hiroto Murasawa, an expert on the culture of beauty at Osaka Shoin Women's University, believes that cute proves the Japanese simply don't want to grow up. "It's a mentality that breeds non-assertion," he said.

On the other hand, Tomoyuki Sugiyama, author of "Cool Japan," believes cute is rooted in Japan's harmony-loving culture.

Collecting miniatures such as mementos for cell phones can be traced back 400 years to the Edo Period, when tiny carved "netsuke" charms were wildly popular, said Sugiyama, president of Digital Hollywood, a Tokyo school for computer-graphics designers, video artists and game creators.

"Japanese are seeking a spiritual peace and an escape from brutal reality through cute things," he said...
Debate? It sounds like they agree. ;)

Japan smitten by love of cute
The Age, June 18, 2006
These days, Japan Inc, known in the past for more serious products like Toyota cars and the Sony Walkman, is busy exporting the epitome of cute - bubble-headed Hello Kitty, Pokemon video games, the singing duo Puffy and the Tamagotchi virtual pet, just to name a few.

But the obsession with things cute - or "Kawaii" (pronounced Ka-wuh-EEH) in Japanese - has the world's second biggest economy doing some soul-searching, wondering what exactly is making its people gravitate so frantically toward cuteness.

A big reason for the emerging debate: Cute-worship is gaining such overseas acceptance it's rapidly becoming Japan's global image. More...

Edit: Gah, my bad, being away from the forums I missed the other posts/thread.

This is an undeniable fact. Go anywhere in Japan, pick up 10 girls and line them up, against 10 white chicks, the average J-girl would be a lot easier on the eye. That is also true of young Chinese girls. I take the subway everyday in Toronto and the only pretty girls I see are Asian (usually Chinese).
