Anyone here into Japanese Dramas? (DORAMA)

This is a thread devoted to your favorite Japanese drama series's. I love them because they have some of the hammiest acting you will ever see but some of the most gripping drama you will find.

My favorites are Gokusen, Shomuni (Power Office Girls,) Forbidden Fruit and Bewitched in Tokyo. Although I am also getting into TricK, (Japan's X-Files,) quite a bit. I also dig this one series about a hockey team but the name escapes me. (That show mined Queen's entire back catalogue as the soundtrack too.)

"Koi ga Shitai" is one of my favorite 'musy mushy kissy kissy' melodramas.

"Gokusen" is the all time tops in my book, but the first series only. Second one just kinda sucked IMO.

"Densha Otoko" is right up there too, but I would bet that some people might find the lead char. kinda grating. It's a hilarious piss take on otaku's done good though!

Just starting to download the first of the 3 "Trick" series, I hear it's pretty damn good.

Not Jpanese, but I would also recomend "Sorry, I Love You" - a Korean tearjerker for all those sentimental FG out there.

Gokusen 2 was terrible. I was really really disappointed. Not even Nakama Yukie could salvage that show, and that's really saying something.

Trick is great, though, all three seasons. I also recommend "Kimi wa Petto" if you're looking for a comedy/romance show.

Shomuni is good, I see reruns of that all the time, but it does get a bit stale after a while...

And of course...who can be without GTO? Fuyutsuki-sensei...

Yeah - I missed the boat on Trick until very recently unfortunately, all 3 seasons have been avail. here in the US for quite some time too, it's me who is slow on the uptake!

It's almost as amazing as how easily Hollywood can remove all sembelance of goodness from any J-Movie once they decide to remake it huh! Just wish people would learn to leave perfection alone!!

My fucking god, I never thought I would live to see the day this site would see CFL logos in the avatars!

On a side note, that is what made Gokusen a bit better, she just inspired them to get out alive, not to go on to greatness. FIGHTO-HO!

Anyone know much about a show called 3-B I believe? (A longhaired teacher with the same grey sportjacket with suade patches all the time. It's got like 10 different series's or something.)

I notice a lot of running in the streets. Writers have still managed to keep this convention going even with the inconvenient invention of the mobile phone. Tokyo is a big city but that doesn't stop everyone inconveniently bumping into each other in unlikely locations. There are also a lot of emotional flashpoints in local parks - usually ones with a set of swings. A lot of characters get soaked to the skin by rain when in mental turmoil.

Ah yes, but this is another J-Dorama Cardinal Rule: When one selflessly gives up their umbrella in hopes of winning the heart of a secret love, it will begin to rain the moment you go outside and realize things have begun to go wrong!

MDN: TV dramas inspire privileged princesses to dress up lives as nightclub hostesses

Three out of four upcoming shorts appear to have similar themes according to Japan Zone:
Fuji TV is to air a four-night series of dramas next month featuring some of the hottest young female talent. All playing roles quite different from their images, the actresses will portray the hopes and struggles of today's young female Japanese. The first episode will air on February 27 and feature Ueto Aya (20) as an office worker who dreams of the glamourous life and works nights as a hostess. Horikita Maki (17) stars on night two, as a girl who makes money from men in online chatrooms...Yamada Yu plays an aspiring actress who works as a "cabaret club" hostess. In the final episode Ueno Juri (19), who made her name in the movie "Swing Girls," plays a pachinko parlour worker who has no luck with men. The four episodes, under the omnibus title "Tsubasa no Oreta Tenshi-tachi" (Angels With Broken Wings), are based on stories by writer Yoshi, who is known as an author of online fiction.

The DVD will be available some time in February.

Densha Otoko TV series is available as well.

i totally love Gokusen. seen all of season 1, watching season 2, and i also enjoy the anime which follows a different track then the dorama - Kumiko IS taking over the family business.
hm... never heard of Shomuni. what's it about?
also, where is a good site or two to find out about doramas, ie, to see if i'm interested?

Has anyone seen this? My wife has it on tape and I have watched a bit of it...
Its preetty old now I reckon...but it is pretty exciting for a Jap drama...
I know my father in law is always watching those historical dramas on Sunday night, religiously.....

Yes, I've seen it. It is rather different than most dramas. It is written by 宮藤官九郎 who wrote other drams that are worth watching such as the rakugo-themed "Tiger and Dragon" and "Kisarazu Cat's Eye".

The original DVD release included Japanese subtitles which were relatively rare at the time but quite handy for casual language practice.

Kekkon Dekinai Otoko - The Man Who Could Not Marry

is quite watchable.
The main male character is not the usual indecisive J-wimp (or K-wimp or C-wimp in K-dramas and C-dramas, repsectively).

Gokusen 1 and Shomuni 1, 2 and 3 are also quite good.
Never criticize anyone until you've walked several kilometres in their shoes.
Because

1. You're now several kilometres away; and

2. You've got their shoes.
