Singapore executes Australian for drug trafficking
SINGAPORE, Dec. 2 10:40 KYODO
Singapore executed Friday an Australian man convicted of drug trafficking, ignoring the Australian government's pleas for clemency.
Nguyen Tuong Van was hanged at dawn at Changi Prison, nearly three years after he was arrested at Changi Airport in 2002 with almost 400 grams of heroin strapped to his body.

Too bad the guy wasn't able to find a way to do a "Switcheroo" with his brother while in the slammer. That way the more guilty of the 2 would have his neck stretched and eyes bulged... 8O

Any video footage of the execution?

The moral to the story is this:

If you plan on knowingly committing a crime punishable by death, do it on a slow newsday and you will win the hearts of professional protesters everywhere. If you're going down, be a martyr no matter how heinous your crime was.

This guy was no martyr but will always be remembered as such.

Or do you mean "this kind of thing should be allowed if they're Australian".

Frankly, I think the Australian government was playing politics the whole time and had no interest in actually helping this guy anyway. If they were serious, they would have given Singapore an ultimatum: Hang our boy and we impose economic sanctions on your ass. Instead, they made a bunch of appearances and used that guy for a photo op.

Did he deserve to have his eyes bulge, I think so but don't think for a second that his own government gave a crap either way.

Ok I'll bite. Why on earth would this guy deserve to get his 'eyes bulged' for smuggling drugs, no matter how heinous? The drug trade is a matter of supply and demand. Someone wanted it. Why not think about why it's desired instead of killing the person that supplies it?

There is no question that the punishment is absurd. Heroin is not a pretty drug, but being a fucking runner with it should not mean one forfeits one's life if the dog sniffs the right bag. That this sort of thing is common in Singapore says a lot about East Asian totalitarianism: work, consume, sleep. Don't fuck with anything that might disturb that.

Ugly to see people enthused about the guy's death. If all drug runners/producers should be put to death you'd have to kill a good part of Columbia, Mexico and Afghanistan. Why not get at the social causes instead of murdering people who are doing a job?

No supply = no getting high. Supply also begats demand.

Welcome to capitalism. Enjoy your stay.

He wasn't an innocent runner. He was doing it to make money off the backs of people who are hopelessly addicted to heroin.

He was no martyr.

One crucial difference - the people in those countries are really poor - this guy was just looking to make more money - he certainly wasn't poor.

He was very unlucky, but not poor, and certainly not innocent. Don't like that system?

Then don't go to SE Asian countries where they have the death penalty for smuggling drugs! Duh.

Your silly argument rests on reactionary notions of national sovereignty, i.e. well, shit, that's the LAW over there, who am I to question that? Apartheid in South Africa? Hey if you're black just leave the country! After all nothing I could do could change the fact that apartheid exists!

You are also wrong in asserting the guy was trying to make money, as someone posted above he was trying to pay off loans his drug-dealing brother took out. The world of minority drug-dealing isn't pretty is it? We're talking about a man's life; does he deserve to lose it for shit like this?

There's something called universals, guideposts we use to judge human behaviour (regardless of what border it falls under). While one could appear to make no value judgement in asserting that he 'knew the risks and thus deserved the punishment' one in fact makes a very profound judgement, that the will of totalitarian governments is in fact sovereign and should not be criticized. And that says a lot more about you guys than this individual.

No it is not about the will of a totalitarian gov't being sovereign, it is about a dope smuggler smuggling smack in a country that smacks back to those who attack with heroin or crack stuffed in their backpack.

THere is no universal for criminal punishment... comparing apartheid to dope smuggling is like comparing an anal vibrator to a chicken choker. Comparing racial segregation to dope smuggling says enough about you to end this conversation.

Opposing capital punishment in this particular crime is not equivalent to defending drug smuggling. If you oppose the death penalty, it doesn't matter what the guy did. The UK does not impose the death penalty for any crime - drug smugglers, convicted child murderers, rapists and serial killers are allowed to remain alive - and it is to the great credit of British politicians that they have refused to reinstate the ultimate penalty even though a popular referendum would show a majority in favour.

Singapore has chosen not to carry out the death sentence when it has been imposed in previous cases. This time, they went ahead. That seems arbitrary to me.

30g is a mandatory death sentence, isn't it? This guy had what, 10 times that! 300g is a lot of heroin. If this guy was reprieved, it'd throw into question the whole notion of having the death penalty for drug smuggling (which is a separate argument - as BB says).

A mandatory sentence can have exceptions, but only where there's mitigating circumstances (the smuggler was a mule, or was genuinely duped) - in the eyes of Singaporean lawmakers, this was a open and shut case. Under those laws there was no way he was ever going to be let off with that quantity.

..authorities in Singapore executed a man after he was convicted of storing 2.7 kilograms (six pounds) of marijuana at his apartment. Raman Selvam Renganathan, 39, was hung at Changi Prison..

..Amnesty noted that of 408 executions reported by Singapore since 1991, +252 were for drug offenses..

they lock up the users
http://www.sana.org.sg/law.htm

This summer, my cousin had her car robbed by junkies while she was delivering 'meals on wheels' to the sick and elderly.

If we had stricter policies on dealing with harddrug distribution and abuse, I think it would really help clean up society, but as it stands if your a user and commit crimes to get money for your drugs, or your a dealer or supplier they put you in a big cell in a prison with pooltables, tvs and internet access. Its like a fuckin holiday, and because they have a shortage of cells, the rate of turnover/early release is quite high.
Many of them get to go home for the weekends too!?

Wiki wrote:In sexuality, sniffing or licking and then consuming smegma is considered to be an extreme fetish, often associated with homosexuality, but not always. Some individuals crave the strong potent odor of unwashed genitals and ask their partners to go days, even weeks without bathing in order for them to produce smegma and a filmy slime in their genital area so that it can be sniffed, licked and consumed. Males and females who indulge in this activity often take great pleasure from the smell and taste of smegma which forms around the rim of the head of a penis. In rare instances, an individual will use their fingers to collect the smegma from the genital area and then wipe it on the upper lips or face of their partners. This is done so that the individual it is done to can continually smell the substance on their face for a longer period of time and as a means of degradation and humiliation. This practice is not considered to be common as most people recoil at this sort of activity, however, those that do engage in this particular fetish, normally only do it with those they know very well and usually do not speak of it openly. The health risks of engaging in 'smegma play' are less than those of engaging in coprophagia but bacterial infections and stomach ailments can occur, especially in those who indulge in this activity for the first time.
