Working holiday visa

Postby Devo » Tue Apr 19, 2005 9:51 pm

I applied for a working holiday visa today, in Melbourne, Australia. Need to wait 'til next Wednesday to know if I'm successful. Being a bit of a pessimist, I'm worried that I might not receive one. So tell me, what are my chances?

BTW I found this site a week ago, so glad I don't need to visit Japan Today anymore!

depends on who you are... any drug charges? Rape? Sexual assault? How about violent tendencies... Did you get the rectum examination? If so I can guarantee you're getting your visa.. if not, well it's 50/50.. I do hope for your sake that you washed your bum before the application procedure.

Do you have TB? are you infected or have you ever been infected with an STD? If not, no worries mate.

They will give it to anyone provided you don't have a criminal record, aren't carrying some horrific disease, or haven't been vandalizing Japanese Embassies recently.

Nup, no criminal record. Rectal examination? Nope, just a little kancho - I barely noticed. Thanks for your reply - now I can finish my wine and go to bed to prepare for another mind-numbing day of writing software.

They have a limited amount of working holiday visas per year. It's more than probable that they never attain the limit so they'll give it to anyone who asks.

Sorry to drag an old thread up. The Uk - Japan agreement:

Aplicants must be aged between eighteen (18 ) and twenty-five (25) years both inclusive at the time of application for the said visa, except in those cases where the competent authorities of the Government of Japan agree to extend the limitation of age up to thirty (30) years

well i am 27 with a squeaky clean record, a degree, a cereer (that i am bored with) and am learning Japanese. I want to travel round Japan for 5 months or so to improve my Japanese and get away from the grind.

Does anyone know what the "extend the limitation of age up to thirty (30) years" is based on?

Anyone between 25-30 had an aplication rejected/accepted?

hmmm?

thnx

im also interested if any one has any view on what Papa-Lazarou asks...

also from UK, my working holiday visa expires next week and I have to go back to the land of evil London. I so dont want to return, but i have no choice. its hard leaving when you dont want to. its hard leaving when things were just beginning to look rosey. its a cruel twist of fate.

as I understand it, you can only apply for 1 working hoiliday visa to japan every 8 years. Im 21 now, so if I wanted to come again when i was 29, would i be liable? or would i be rejected even if i have a clean record etc, just on the basis that ive done it before - give the chance to someone new. (im selfish)

also, what are my chances of getting a design job in japan if i dont have a degree of any kind, but i can speak the language JLPT level 1, and am great in the field of design? (im a good lier) anyone got a design job here?

The best way to keep on keeping on is either get a company-sponsored visa or get hitched.

Full time design jobs - most pay roughly the same as teaching pretty much, if you can even find them.

Most designers I know (and even myself) work freelance or have small companies themselves.

Being a good liar won't help you though mate. You need to show examples of work here, and have built up a decent portfolio.

Dunno about the UK, but from Australia I was able to come here twice on working holiday visas. The second one was only 1 year after the first one. I just had to write a fancy story about how much I culture and stuff I learnt the first time, and how much I wanted to learn the second time. However I was still under 25 the second time.

The first time I got one 6 month extension for a total of 1 year, the second trip I got 2 extensions, for a total of 1.5 years.

This was all early 90's though. Not sure what its like these days.

I had two working holiday visas, one in 1993 (21) and another in 1995 (23). I had to write a letter explaining why I wanted a second one but otherwise there was no problem. A friend at that time who was 27 got one for herself in 1993 with a similar letter.

Obviously my knowledge is dated now, but this is my understanding of how the system works: The WHV system is reciprocal. Each country involved has agreements with one or more (all?) other countries regarding how many visas they will issue per year, the age limits, and the length of the visas. As far as I know, if Canada agrees to issue 5,000 visas per year to Japanese, then Japan also agrees to issue 5,000 visas per year to Canadians. The number 5000 is just a random number I chose, the important thing is that the same number of visas are issued both ways. Generally far more Japanese want to go to Canada (or Australia, UK, etc) than there are people coming to Japan. This means that for Japanese it can often be very hard to get even 1 visa, far less a 2nd one. But for us.....a 2nd visa, or a single visa past 25, is often possible.

The short version is that unless something drastic has changed then you shouldn't have problem getting a visa after 25.

Two top-posters of the FG from the EU (see you guys at the bonenkai) got their second working holiday visa at ages 25-ish and 29+ respectively.

great, so after a few years or so if i did want to come back to japan, i might be able to on a working holiday visa, if i write a letter explaining why i wanted another one -- the love of japanese culture, people, food, language, travel, and wish to learn more....etc... ?

Yup, shouldn't be a problem. I came once in 1993 (Jan to Sept) and again from mid-95. It didn't seem like a big deal.
