Star Bulletin: Sushi chef faces 20 years for killing
A Big Island jury has found sushi chef Yasushi Kato guilty of the lesser charge of manslaughter in the stabbing death last year of the owner of the Hama Yu Japanese Restaurant in the Waikoloa Resort...Kato, 29, from Tokyo, testified through a translator that Ito, 61, was extremely demanding and made repeated, vague references to someone dying...Kato testified he came to the United States on a student visa but eventually remained in the country illegally, working as a sushi chef in several Los Angeles restaurants.

AP -- Fired sushi restaurant worker fatally stabs co-worker
OAKLAND, Calif. - A 22-year-old man was stabbed to death Thursday by his co-worker, who had just been fired from the sushi restaurant where they both worked. Angel Martinez was pronounced dead at Highland Hospital shortly after the 11 a.m. stabbing at Sushiya restaurant, said Sgt. Tim Nolan. Police have not released the identity of the assailant, who fled the scene after the attack. No one else was injured, and the restaurant was closed for business at the time. Investigators have not confirmed a motive for the stabbing, but said Martinez may have had something to do with the man's firing.

Jesus. I didn't realize the sushi trade was such a violent business. I wonder if they are going to need to offer hostile fire pay like the military gets?

After this we should make it clear that he is a Japanese criminal in all the news stories, and then hold a council on how to deal with this disturbing rise in foreigner crime... then make it more difficult for Japanese to come to the US.

Mercury News: Sushi chef accused of attempted murder of ex-wife in knife attack
A sushi chef will be tried for attempted murder for allegedly attacking his ex-wife with a knife, a judge ruled at a preliminary hearing. As Keiko Watanabe and her boyfriend returned to their Gardena home, Minoru Watanabe allegedly came up from behind and slashed her in the lower back and face, and then threatened the boyfriend with the knife. The victim, who uses a cane and walks with a limp as the result of her injuries, testified Wednesday through an interpreter that she divorced Watanabe in November, after 33 years of marriage. The couple were married in Japan and then moved to the United States in the late 1970s, Deputy District Attorney Jodi Link said Thursday in an interview. At some point after the divorce, Watanabe returned to Japan. When the victim and her boyfriend, Tomio Sakati, reached their front door the evening of March 31, she felt she was being approached, she testified at the hearing. She said she then felt "burning" in her mouth and saw Watanabe's face, and then did not recall anything until she awoke in a hospital 12 days later...more...

SFGate: Sushi restaurant owner stabbed to death in unprovoked S.F. attack
A restaurateur on an errand to buy paper at a Richmond District office supply store was stabbed to death in an unprovoked attack by a stranger, San Francisco police said Thursday. Ryosuke Yoshioka, 59, longtime owner of Sushi-Man restaurant on Bush Street, was stabbed at 2:45 p.m. Wednesday in the parking garage above Office Max at 3700 Geary Blvd., investigators said. Yoshioka was walking from his car toward the store when Peter C. Fong, 45, of San Francisco slashed at him with a knife, investigators said. The attack nearly decapitated Yoshioka, who was pronounced dead at the scene.

A 64-year-old man and his grandson saw the killing, wrestled Fong to the ground and held him until police arrived, said homicide Lt. Jim Spillane. Fong was arrested on suspicion of murder, resisting arrest and weapons charges. The reason for the killing was a mystery to police. Fong apparently supported himself by trading in stocks and did not know Yoshioka, who ran Sushi-Man at 731 Bush St. near Powell Street for 30 years, police said. Yoshioka is survived by his wife and 15-year-old son, police said...more...
