Man kills granddaughter with remote-controlled helicopter

SANO, Tochigi -- A remote-controlled model helicopter operated by a man fatally hit his granddaughter Sunday evening, police said.

Local police suspect the man lost control of the model helicopter, and are investigating the exact cause of the accident.

At around 4 p.m., Mitsuyori Fukaya, 54, was flying a 1.2-meter-long model helicopter in the Tanumacho district of Sano when it plunged and hit the head of his granddaughter, 5-year-old Miyu Hayakawa, investigators said.

The girl was rushed to hospital where she died from loss of blood caused by her brain injuries. (Mainichi)


Tragic story really. My son actually wanted one of these things for Christmas so as least we were warned. :(

That's funny...PaPa was what all us grandkids used to call my granddad (on dad's side) as well (mom's dad passed years ago) - but since this was in the deeeep south, it did end up sounding just like PawPaw.

I'm having a deja vu. I swear I heard almost this exact same story a few years back, some old grampa chopped off the head of his little granddaughter with a remote controlled miniature helicopter that he used for spraying pesticides over his rice paddies. :cry:
