Lords of Dogtown

Just writing this because Lords of Dogtown opened in Japan this past weekend. As a skater from the 80's, (during Hawk and Caballero's glory years,) the trailers alone brought back huge memories so I had to see it. (I was in Japan when it was out in Canada and back before the DVD release.) I have to say that it ruled.

I heard rumours that Alva and Peralta did the skate stunts for this movie and doubled for the actors playing them. If this is true then the old guys have still got it.

In a lot of the reviews I've read, skaters seem to prefer Dogtown and Z-Boys to this newer fictionalized account. I've only seen the documentary but it is a very good film.

One of the old Z-Boys has the trailer on his Fuck You Heroes website. So far that's all I've seen of the doc but I have heard great things about it. Unfortunately, Tsutaya's copies of it have been rented out nonstop for at least a month. (I check for it everyday but no success so far.)

i heard the same thing. i saw Dogtown/zboys and thought it was great. I can't imagine seeing a fictionalized film with love stories and all that shit. Could it be a modern day "thrashin'"

Let's just say LOD is a lot better than Skateboard: The Movie was. (A horrible Bad News Bears for skaters movie that ended with Tony Alva losing in the final round of a competition to Leif Garrett, yes TA got beat down by LEIF FUCKING GARRETT at the end of this movie.)

I have not yet seen LoD but it is based on the same story as Dogtown and Z-Boys, and is written by Stacy Peralta (played by John Robinson in the movie).

Where does Gleaming the Cube rank? (It was later retitled "A Brother's Revenge" as no one knows how to gleam a cube, and I don't think they really show you in the movie.)

I never saw Skateboard the movie. But Thrashin' was pretty bad. Bad acting and you can see the microphone in one of the first scenes.

There is another documentary about Mark Gator Rogowski thats pretty good.

But if you want to see the best skateboard movie of them all, you must watch The Search for Animal Chin with the bones brigade (tony hawk, steve caballero, lance mountain, tommy guererro and Mike McGill) from 1987.

Greener, I remember those skater guys you mentioned. I had a Lance Mountain skateboard. I skated for a bunch of years till I turned gangster. Hey minna san, what is that BMX movie with the BMX kids crimstoppers? Oh wait it coming to me, I'm poppin..... Wasn't Tony Alva also in Thrashin?

As for Animal Chin, I will definately look into getting a copy of that one. I was a massive Bonez Brigade fan and still think they were the greatest team of all time. (The Z-Boyz were the most influential and by far the most important but the BB had the most talent under one banner for the longest period of time.)

As for the Gator doc, I have wanted to see that one for a while but haven't yet. I've heard good things about it but the skate community still seems to be pretty reluctant to discuss Gator at all. (It's been 15 years and he's still in for about another 5-10 years.) I hope eventually he can be considered the hall of famer that he was as before the murder, he was considered second to Hawk as the greatest skater of all time. (In terms of titles won, placings and what not.)

Yeah, they were great. I had my Simms wide board refurbished at the Bonez custom shop on Melrose in LA. I also had them assemble a nice stick for me, my brother-in-law liked old skinny decks from the 1960s, I found a naked deck at a garage sale and had the Bonez shop put some modern hardware on it, and gave it to him as a birthday present. He said it was the best skate he ever had.. although I was a bit appalled to see him use it as a furniture dolly when he moved to a new house.
