Early 90's Gaijin in Japan Books

Postby Mulboyne » Sat Dec 17, 2005 11:38 am

A used copy of "Thank You and Ok!: An American Zen Failure in Japan" by David Chadwick (1994) seems to be available on Amazon for 65 cents and I was on the point of sticking in an order when I noticed this recent customer review:
Shane Walton Pfannmuller wrote:This book goes to prove the point that failures shouldn't write books about things they don't know much about because, obviously they failed at it. Mr. Chadwick has very little insight into Japan than any other English teacher whose worked there for a few months. It is full of stereotypes and dull to read, making hard to even believe that Mr. Chadwick has ever even been to Japan. Basically this is a scam to cheat you out of your money and destroy perfectly innocent trees. Read books written by the masters, and not the half-wit also-rans.

Has anyone actually come across this book? Or "Circle Round The Sun, A : A Foreigner in Japan, Inc." by Peregrine Hodson which seems to be going for 66 cents. "Learning to Bow : Inside the Heart of Japan" by Bruce Feiler gets a better press which might explain the $4 second-hand price. Scathing reviews actually make the books sound potentially entertaining. Even allowing for p&p, I probably can't go wrong.
