Republicans Blocking International Access to Official Sites Performance

The Republican Party appears to again be blocking Internet users from outside the United States from visiting its official web sites, with http://www.gop.com, http://www.rnc.org and http://www.GeorgeWBush.com all dropping traffic that originates outside North America. The timing and implementation of the blocking - which is now being provided through the political party's own web host rather than Akamai - suggests an ongoing interest in traffic filtering unrelated to the recent election.

The sites are all hosted by the Republican National Committee, the official site of America's governing party, which currently controls the Senate and House of Representatives as well as the White House. The blocking expands a practice implemented on the GeorgeWBush.com domain during the final week of the U.S. presidential campaign, when the Bush campaign site used Akamai's content management service to manage incoming traffic, citing security concerns.

On Nov. 24, the GeorgeWBush.com site stopped using Akamai and began having its domain name server (DNS) requests handled by the RNC's server, and redirecting traffic to the RNC's main site, gop.com. The RNC now appears to possess the capability to implement geographic blocking similar to the services Akamai provided for GeorgeWBush.com. Since Nov. 26, the rnc.org, gop.com and GeorgeWBush.com domains all show an identical pattern of failed requests from stations in London, Amsterdam and Sydney, while Netcraft's four U.S. monitoring stations show no performance problems.

If you want to get through to the Republican sites to find out what they are hiding, you can use http://www.anonymization.net. Gets you right through. http://www.anonymization.net/http://www.gop.com/News/LatestHeadlines.aspx

Any US based proxy will get you in ( why you'd want to though is beyond me )

Actually, ya gotta love the GOP blocking their own website from expats overseas. Even not counting the military, the GOP in have always had the majority of American votes cast from overseas....until this year. This year even the fat cat expats on The Package voted against Bush, hee, hee.

The Republicans figured out the odds overseas were against them and pulled the plug on "alien" visits to the Republican sites in the States. However theRepublicans Abroad site works as doesRepublicans Japan which provides the GOP News that we're talking about.

Point is after the election they started allowing international traffic
and then they flip-floped, blocking it again even after the election.

Still blocked in '05 and soon entering '06.
Maybe they are trying to block the hackers from places like China and North Korea.

so I'd chalk the rumors up to the 'Skankster,' which is one of the reasons I ignore him.

FWIW, what is blocked is a lot of gov't and educational sites (like unis) in the US and Japan, along with some blogs, geocities, and the google cache.
