Curious as to whether he spoke any of the language before his hitch started...

It seems he studied Japanese and had been to Japan and back at least a couple of years before his stint in the book. It's not cheap enough for me to do more than browse it although friends have recommended it. Ronald Dore writes approvingly too which is interesting because he usually defends Japanese economic practices.

My boss just read some book about how wonderful Toyota is, and tomorrow we are having a meeting tomorrow to instill some of their "techniques" (I don't know how it will translate to a 10 person company)...maybe I should point this one out to him, but I doubt he would be amused.
