China unveiled plans on Monday to make a war movie, produced and financed by Americans, chronicling the 1937 massacre of civilians in Nanjing by invading Japanese soldiers...The planned film about the massacres of tens of thousands of Chinese civilians by Japanese troops will be based on Iris Chang's best-selling account, "The Rape of Nanking," Xinhua news agency said. "We hope we can make the film a classic on a massacre in the Second World War, just like 'Schindler's List' about the miserable experience of Jewish people during the war," Gerald Green, the American producer of the movie, was quoted as saying. Green's producer credits include Oliver Stone's 1986 film "Salvador" and the Emmy-winning 1978 television miniseries "Holocaust"...more...

BEIJING, China (Reuters) -- A Chinese court ordered two Japanese authors to pay $200,000 damages to a Nanjing massacre survivor for accusing her of faking her account of the 1937 attack. Their publisher rejected the judgment as an assault on free speech.
Xia Shuqin, who lived through the Japanese attack on the then national capital in which China says 300,000 died, had sued historians Shudo Higashinakano and Toshio Matsumura and their Japanese publisher, the official Xinhua news agency said.
The Japanese authors had claimed in a 1998 book that historical records of the massacre in the eastern Chinese city, then known as Nanking, were untrue and accounts by witnesses including Xia were fake, Xinhua said.
