Lodging in Japan

I'm plannining on visitng Japan before I do my study abroad and was wondering is it possible to obtain stay with a lodge or family without intentions of working or studying? Some people tell me no while others tell me theres programs out there that are dedicated to hooking people up with places to stay short term (2 months).

find some obaasan that needs looking after, I am sure a family would be glad to have you help her and live short-term rent free.. MIght have to do some light house keeping or something.

Could try an extended temple stay stay at one, when it is time to go, head to another. hehehe
