Rail passengers to be scanned / Ministry plans facial recognition system to detect terrorist suspects

The Construction and Transport Ministry currently is studying the introduction of a new biometrics system that can identify terrorist suspects in station crowds.

For the envisaged facial recognition system, the accuracy of conventional security cameras is too low. It is thus necessary to install a large number of expensive new cameras.

Question: Real Terrorist suspects? or anyone that looks like a terrorist racial/flavor of the day.

Question: Why does is always require expensive new equipment? Yes I know each leap in technology costs money, blah, blah...

Question: Want to get even with somebody or group of people you don't like? Just program the thing to go off whenever somebody remotely resembling them passes through it.

Crisscross: Face authentication system to be tested at Tokyo subway station

The Institution for Transport Policy Studies will test a new video monitoring system for one hour from 2 p.m. every weekday from May 1-19 at a designated ticket gate at Kasumigaseki Station, institute officials announced Friday. The system can detect designated people among passengers by analyzing their facial features. The system is designed to issue an alert if the video monitor detects a person with facial features matching those of a person on a specified list, such as a list of criminal suspects compiled by the police, according to NTT Communications. It analyses the position of the nose and eyes as well as features of the skin from a video capture of the face. Technically, it can check one person against a list of 10,000 people per second, the company said.
