the big factor was the altitude and speed they were traveling at (sorry if somebody already mentioned this. i might have missed it). ejecting at 12,000 miles per hour would be like getting hit by a 12,000 mph block of concrete. you're fucked either way. oh well, i'm sure it must have been a quick, painless death more or less. couldn't have lasted more than a few seconds.. i wonder what it feels like to dissintigrate!? 8O

I dont mean eject in the sense of shoot the bodies out of the damn thing LOL

I meant, eject a pod, that is capable of withstanding those kinds of forces...

Fact: they didn't try.

Question: why not?

I don't even think they needed to BOARD the ISS. Have the dudes already in the station check the under belly of the Shuttle. I'm sure they have some sort of telescope onboard..

Weren't they also developing some 'mini rocket-ball' equipped with cameras all over it? It could float around outside via remote control..

Questions I'm sure they're asking themselves.

I'm STILL amazed they're STILL using ceramic!!! Isn't there any other material? And why tiles? One molded piece seems more logical.. But then it might crack easier... Hhhhhmmm.

The thing with flight is, you don't want things to be heavy.

Rhenium has a consistent heat tolerance up to 3180C:

I hoped you double checked that calculation, bad things can happen if you get the conversion wrong.

I used an online conversion tool, checked it twice to see if the figures were naughty or nice hehehe

As for the weight, I originally had written, "why not double dip the whole thing in a Rhenium Tempura Batter?" but I deleted it. hehehe
