Shopkeeper keeps bookstore open

Postby den4 » Wed Feb 05, 2003 3:27 am

After watching the news on FNN regarding this bookshop keeper that was going to close up shop due to the death of a boy that had been caught shoplifting, it seemed that those that harrassed the shopkeeper is an indication of what is wrong with Japan....why should it be wrong to catch thieves? And the father of the boy....the kid committed a crime...and he tried to escape from the police....he just happened to get killed because he was stupid enough to run beneath the guard pole when a train was passing by...
This is the same stupid mentality that is prevalent in Japan, which may explain why when the rules don't work, common sense is thrown out the window and stupidity reigns!

I'm glad the shopkeeper has decided to remain open....stupidity should not be the rule of the day...

I watched the evening report on this subject and it did say (as did the article) that he decided to remain open because many more people told him he did the right thing and he shouldn't feel guilty.

I think the answer is that *whatever* you say or do in *any* country you'll find somebody to say you are wrong, somebody to say you are right and somebody to pontificate about it. Witness the current shuttle debate.

I don't pretend to have any special insight into Japanese social working but I do know that like just about every other society it is prone to excesses. Maybe this was just one of those cases. Shit happens.

In Japan, there's real lack of an individual's right to protection of property and one's self. I've placed my local cops and neighbors in abject horror, when I described driving a burglar off my 4th floor balcony. Back home in the Real World, they would have pinned a medal on me. Go figure.

Catching shoplifter in Japan is just NOT done and having one die in an accident is beyond belief. <rant on> It's odd that here in the Land-of-Judo-Karate-Etc., self defense and protection of one's property is not much of right. :? </rant off>

Yeah, shit may happen, but what's the point of having laws if you can't protect your own property or your own self? That's BS! I wonder what the laws really are, despite what the lame keiji who can't even catch a perp when he sees one....because he's probably too busy looking up some girl's skirt, himself?
Not saying all cops are bad, but they really need to get rid of the lame ones...but saying that, it'd be a long time before that happens...

I'll get off my soapbox and see if it will slide me back under the mushroom forest again....

I dunno...I still think the kid deserves a Darwin Award!

I think Japan will eventually change their attitude about apprehension of theives, burglars, banditos, etc..

For one thing, Japan hasn't had to cope with serious crime like say the United States. Hell, their cops just follow you all over hells creation to begin with.

They will definitely have to improve on their criminal justice system, in order to cope with the coming crime waves.. I mean when your economy takes a shit, the criminals come out of the woodwork.

Though I think their policy changes will not be as strigent as foreign countries' criminal justice systems..

What has always amazed me is that they will show the victims in a shootout, but never the perp.. They never show the theif, but the give the owners name, address and telephone number..

It's like they don't want to show it because they want to save face as a nation or something...
