Tokyo Weekender Pirates

Postby GomiGirl » Mon Jan 16, 2006 5:21 pm

Weekender dogged by Trademark Pirate

Image

Has anybody seen the English magazine released sometime this month calling itsef the "Tokyo Weekender - the First Reissue"?

This is apparantly an illegal use of the Tokyo Weekender trademark by a group called "Cosmopolis Inc."

They have been issued with cease and desist letters from the publisher of the revamped Weekender, Caroline Pover, who was granted the use of the original Trademark via a transfer agreement in 2004 from Mary Alexander, widow of Corky Alexander - the original founder of Tokyo Weekender in 1970.

Apparantly legal action is being taken.

Interesting stuff.

The real Weekender is now at http://www.weekenderjapan.com/

The site with the old dead Tokyo Weekender is at weekender.co.jp. That old dead site has always been there---I am guessing that a URL squatter grabbed the domain name and copied the site. What I cannot guess is: Why did they copy the 3-year out-of-date site illegally? The pirates aren't using it for advertising.

A fake Weakender magazine--WTF?!?! Ya gotta be kidding? Who would bother with the terrible reputation that the Weekender has delevoped in its last years?

So why the FSM does the Weekender keep up their absurd Spammer forums open? There is no redirect page from the old site to the new site, no mention that it's an archive, no nothing. Very dodgy. :suspect:
THIS WEEK: 'the best place to take respite from the beat in Tokyo'

I bet you all didn't know, but according to the Weekender website, Tokyo is having a heat wave for Christmas, hee, hee.

About the best place to take respite from the summer heat in Tokyo is your local cineplex. And while the air-con may be on inside, this summer blockbuster season is hotter than ever...
Weekender eh?

Postby igor » Tue Jan 17, 2006 10:19 pm

I heard that there was this thing called Weekender, but never saw it, but somebody later said it disappeared. Then I heard about the "new Weekender" about how it was continuing the great tradition. I guess I have continued the great tradition of never having seen that one either. Is this real, or just some silly frat joke around Gaijin circles (Oh, yes I was covered in the Weekender... didn't you see?). Another interesting part is that those pictures say "Weekender" - where's the Tokyo bit? Anyone got a pic of the "other Weekender" or are you just laughing your asses off at my naivity?

And that's why I'd love to find the knockoff.

I've got a better idea. Why don't they simply just charge people to write articles for them.

I remember seeing a copy in the waiting room at the Tokyo Medical Clinic across from Tokyo Tower several years ago. It featured an Easter message from Kenny Joseph welcoming people of all faiths to join together in fighting the evil of Islam.

Man, that guy was a class-A fruit loop and a bitter little con artist. Is he even still around? His son (Kenny Jr.) seems perfectly rational in his Japan Times column.
I have a blog. Last update: August 18, 2013.

Jeez, Bill Hersey has been writing his society column for decades. I remember his stuff from 1979.

The best thing I ever saw about this magazine was back in about 1997 when The Alien (now Japanzine) was in its heyday and did a parody it called The Reekender.
Poor old Corky was apoplectic and raved about the parody, with its reporting from Bill Cadbury, for weeks.
I miss The Alien and will be forever grateful to it for giving us Charisma Man, IMHO the greatest comic about Japan ever!

Re: Tokyo Weekender Pirates

That article reads like a PR press release....

I only ever saw the Weekender because it was a supplement to the paper I used to get delivered (before there was easy internet). I would not have picked it up otherwise, because it only ever seemed to have relevance to the twenty people who appeared each week in Bill Hersey's party column.
