Has Devicenull "Met the Parents" ?

Postby SF'd Gaijin » Sun Jan 15, 2006 5:52 am

Has anyone heard from Devicenull in Beijing?

If I recall about 6-8 months ago he had gotten to third base with a local girl and was attempting to slide into home. The guy was excited to be "Meeting the Parents" over the holidays. We haven't seen any posts from him lately, so should we assume that "The Mighty Casey Has Struck Out" ??

Well, they have internet in China these days don't they? ;)

As far as I'm concerned it can mean many things... either it was a breeze and he's been getting it on ever since or it was such a disaster he has been too broken-hearted to post about it. Although in my experience the latter seems more likely it's always best to just wait :)

Still alive, definietely did not strike out.
Leaving Beijing with her on the 18th to spend a few days in Chengdu seeing friends, then *gulp* we take the nosedive on home.

The WORST case scenerio has happened however. Her parents know all about us and like me a lot. I take good care of her and am helping her deal with issues that have haunted her for a long time.

So, what has happened that's so bad? Her parents agreed to spread our coverstory of "we are just really good friends from school and I had no where to go for the holidays". It would have worked! At least for a while. Her hometown only has 10,000 or so people, and we are going to be stared at enough as it is and she didn't want the additional pressure from her family members (Bringing a guy home at anytime means he is a serious boyfriend. Doing it during Spring Festival is much much more serious)

Well, she told one of her best friends from her hometown about me, he told his mom, she told a friend, and the other day... the gf's mom called up and mentioned something about how at the hospital (she is near the top of it) who she really didn't know that well asked her if it's true that her daughter has a foreign boyfriend. She is a bad liar :(

So, for the last week or so, this has been the main gossip in the town. EVERYONE knows.

Oh, post #1000

I have just been really busy with school, work, and girlfriend. Way too busy. Scored a recording job for temp recently, $40 an hour for 8 hours of recording word lists. If they like it they want me to sign with them for 15ish hours a month at 500kuai an hour... about $62 an hour. Things are good.

Also, more about her I guess. We have had a healthy share of fights and arguments which we have worked out and made the relationship stronger. Her ex really really hurt her badly. 2.5 years, a year of cheating on her behind her back, an abortion, abandoning her, harrassing her online all the time still, and hunting her phone number from time to time. She never got resolution from it all and she is still having problems with accepting her feelings. It's scary for her, afriad of being hurt even if she knows she won't be. I seem to be doing the right things though. She tried to push me away a few times because "it would be easier", but I didn't let her take that easy way out and we worked it out. She still has problems saying she loves me, but I know she does by her actions and the way she looks into my eyes.

We have had some fun cultural conflicts where I fucked up big time too. It all seems to be going really well though. We are also in the planning stages for summer break now. Need to get 2-3 more people in on it and we are going to drive a good 2600km from her home up to Lhasa and camp along the way, it's gonna be cool. :)

Devicenull,

Thanks for the update. You look better without the beard.

And your lady looks really cute in those photos.

Well, the trick is going to be winning her parents' trust into letting us do it. Her mom really really likes me, her dad seems cool with me, but needs some work. I just bought him a nice (fake) Armani coat for cheap over at Silk Street. Excellent quality, bargained that thing down to $14 from over a few hunndred. And apparently, they really appreciate people who are good at bargaining. I bargain hard as hell and get better prices than most Chinese can think of getting. 110RMB for it, the average price is about 190-220. We got out of there with the coat, a really nice shawl for her mom, shoes for her grandma, 3 shirts for her cousins, and 2 LV wallets for less than 400RMB total ($50ish). Not bad at all really. We should have spent closer to 700 if we paid going rates. I am evil :)

Ah the beard, I was tricked into shaving it. We were getting haircuts and I got it trimmed up a bit. She liked it and told me to shave it all off. She told me 3 times and I finally did it, then she said shave the 'stach, I went ahead and did it. Of course, she claims she was only joking, and then I had to take a razor to it because of the stubble :(

Oh well, it'll grow back, but now I need a scarf because my neck is fucking cold.

I am so whipped

Device,

Here's the deal. You are in China out in the sticks and you are a Gaijin, Laowai, Big Nose, Foreign Devil. You mention that you are already noticed by everyone and stand out like a sore thumb (I've been there too). Now you've got the cutest lady with you so you want to make her feel at ease and her parents like you.

So why don't you go without the beard, at least until you return to civilization?

No one can tell you what to do, but you have got to "represent" and make us Gaijins proud.

Any other opinions out there?

Nah, you don't have to hold the flag for all gaijin/gwailoh, that just plays into the whole racist belief that you can judge an entire nationality by the actions of one person, and in any case it only takes one dickhead to undo all your good PR work. Just be yourself man, but since you did mention that your neck was cold...

Neckbeard. Please consider. :D

The problem with my face is that without the beard, I look like I'm 19, with the beard I look like I'm about 25. I am actually 22.5 now though. If I look young, the venders try to fuck me over, but with the beard I usually get more respect out of them. I plan on trimming it and keeping it nice, but I can't stand shaving everyday... I just get ingrown hairs and whatnot.

I guess some things are similar over there as in Japan..

Actually, I am always thought of being at around 28-32 in Japan w/ or w/o a facial hair, I go back to the U.S. and they card me at liquor stores/bars because I look 20-22. I'm 26. I hope my appearance stay this way for years to come.

She is older than me by a week.

Now, please understand, I am happy with my fate being sealed.
I am, however, scared as all fuck about meeting her parents and family.
The only thing worse will be the day that our parents have to meet each other... oh god, let that day be far in the future!

Well, she is nervous as all hell too, but she wants to do it and knows we have to at some point. We are great for each other, we each seem to complement each other's flaws perfectly and the same weird shit interests us both. Yes, it's fast... but that doesn't mean it's wrong. God, still scared as fuck. We leave for the train station in about 13 hours from now.

Device,

Let us know how it went.

Why be scared or nervous? If you love each other and are compatible...that is what really counts. Is she willing and happy to relocate to the States and how does she feel about that? That might be a problem if you live in the sticks...where are you from? If she is not willing to come back with you and share your life here, then you have a problem.

I can see you, the wife, the kids, the parents (hers and yours), and two cats in the yard with you wherever you live.

Quick update: It's been 2 days, I have met her friends, they like me. Her pets love me, her parents really really like me. I am doing nothing apart from being myself. We are in a very small town, rather rural where foreigners never really go, and no one is staring at us at all. I'll repeat that for you, NO ONE IS STARING AT US AT ALL. I can go for walks here through the markets and the worst I get is "What country are you from?". The people around the building complex who I have met on my own just wanted to talk with me and shoot the shit once they figured out I can speak Chinese at a decent level.

The weather here is great, the sky is full of stars, the food is excellent and cheap, the water is actually drinkable from the tap, and the people don't stare. When we were in Chengdu, her best friend basically told me that I am the most "Chinese" foreigner who she has ever known.

The story was going to be that we are just good friends, but it has changed. She has no problem saying that we are a couple. She lost her backpack with all her underwear, pens, mp3 player, makeup, skin care, and her notebook in Chengdu and I have been slowly replacing it all with stuff that is equal to or better so she doesn't have to worry. I should have asked for a taxi receipt and checked to make sure she didn't leave it when we got out of the cab, but, live and learn.

In short, I don't know when, but this is the girl I am going to marry someday.

Device,

Thanks for the update.

How long can you stay in China on a work visa? At some point in the future I would think you would want to return to your home....I mean when you are a much older Gaijin like me..... Where did you grow up, and where are your parents? Nice to be in China, but can you stay there forever?

I'm on a student visa, it's good for 4 years. The next "visa" I will be going after is just permanent residency. I love it here, I love the people, the food, the lifestyle, etc. I tried in the summer to go back home for 3 weeks, I just got sick from the food and hated how lonely it felt even in the cities. I am from Chicagoland, grew up there and parents are still there. My opinion towards them is visits from time to time in the future taking turns who flies where. I am fairly confident that I can stay here forever :)
