Most Japanese people won't know it as den den town though, you have to say you want to get to Nihombashi if you're going by taxi. By subway, Ebisucho station will put you right in the heart of if, but you can easily walk from Namba. There's no one best place for games, you just have to shop around.

Um, Nihombashi is in Tokyo. Osaka is Nipponbashi.

You stepped in to correct me by saying essentially – “It’s pronounced ‘tom-ay-to’ not ‘tom-ah-to’ ”, and then go on to defend your assertion by pointing out the spelling of the word. That’s the equivalent of what you did (read back from the beginning if you need to). It would be funny if not for the fact that, as you say, you’ve been living in Osaka for 16 years.

Are you kiddiing?? Nihon vs Nippon are completely different pronunciations and calling Nipponbashi Nihonbashi is wrong. You are wrong and you can't deal with it. Maybe if you had actually learned Japanese you would know that. So ya, when I see something like that then I am going to say something. Now if we were talking about the pronunciation of 松屋町筋 then yes that would be different as the locals say it differently than the way it is officially read.

Oh and I didn't correct your spelling but rather the way it is read, i.e. the pronuciation,にっぽんばし,which is different than correcting romanji. I merely wrote it in romanji because this is an English board.

Actually the real spelling of romaji has no "n".. a very common spelling error.

Honestly most people who do not live in 西成区　will think that it is pronounced にほんばし. People in the area will generally say にっぽんばし, which is the official prononciation for the Osaka 日本橋, but not everyone knows this or even cares.

edit: its kind of like the 居酒屋　(or how they call themselves: 居楽屋) 白木屋. Many people will pronounce this しらきや when its real prononciation is しろきや. There may be an official prononciation, but not everyone cares to pay attention.

Ditto on Honda. Most employees when in the US have learned to call it "Handa" (Schwa sounding "a") rather the "Honda" (to rhyme with "Bone-da").

I've done voice-overs for Honda racing videos and every farckquing time, we have to have a meeting to decide whether to call Handa or not depending on the intended market.

That may be, in part, because Honda (phonetically spelt) means ‘engine’ in one south-eastern language. I was involved in that case, if this is the same case we are talking about. Japanese and American clients were worried about how to stop the local people from putting the name ‘Honda’ on their engines when in the local language all it means is ‘engine’. In the end, ‘we won’, which means that locals of that area can’t label their harvesting equipment as hondas'. A very silly and unnecessary victory in my book.
