English PC in Tokyo

Postby jasper » Sun Feb 02, 2003 1:19 pm

Friend is looking for a new English PC (with English OS, soft) in Tokyo. I remember a few years ago they had a floor at Tzone in Akihabara catering to this - plus lots of English soft. Anybody now if they still have, or any other places to get.

Thanks, Jasper

what, what, what?!!! [kyle's mom <-- southpark]

english software in japan? are you kidding? what about hardware? can't seem to get anything but japanese out here in okinawa, unless i ask a friend to get for me on-base... plus, shipping is a bitch, so i never use internet shopping, unless i have it sent to my dad's address...

i wish BEST-DENKI had english hardware/software.. need photoshop 7, illustrator 10, dreamweaver MX, and nobody's given me a cracked cd in a long, long time...

If you know anybody in the military bases, you can try to see if they can get some decent pricing for you...they might be able to get something shipped from stateside....something to consider...

Akihabara or Dell

Postby dave » Sun Apr 06, 2003 1:17 am

You can walk into almost any small private computer shop in Akihabara and order a custom built computer built to your own specs. This includes an English OS. I recently purchased my system from Dell Japan. Although they don't have much for an English speaking staff, you can order from them toll free, and you can have your order customized and shipped to your location within about 3-5 days. Dell Japan can provide you with an English OS, and any other English applications can be purchased later from Dell USA.

or build it yourself!

i built this deck much cheaper here in sapporo than i could in london.. took a few hours traipsing around to compare prices, and say 2 hours to build the deck itself...

2.4 gig p4 with 533 bus.. sexy!

1 gig ram

1x wd 80 gig hd with 8mb buffer
1x 200 gig ibm hd with 4 meg buffer

pioneer a104 dvdr/rw
yamaha cdr/rw

creative audigy soundblaster 2 platinum

aopen mother board

mitsubishi diamond m2 19" monitor

win xp corporate - free from net ^^

for some ppl, those kiddie jap pcs are fine for their tasks, but why pay for stuff you dont need or restrict yourself to a deck that can`t be upgraded?

You're joking about the reliable manufacturing right? IBM's "DeathStar" disks had notorious failure rates... that was one of the big reasons for selling the division.

We had to rip out 8 IBM 80GB disks out of several servers and replace them with 120GB WD drives. Never had a problem since. :!:

nah, not really, i have never, ever had a problem with ibms hds.. i usually had 2 slung in each deck i have owned, but when i built this one i saw wd offered 8 meg buffer so chose that for the c disk.. i`ve never lost data or had a failure with ibm..but i still follow that maxim "backup backup backup!"

Hell yeah! I've got an IBM deathstar 45 gb hard drive in my puter right now! (Yeah, that's the model specifically covered in the california lawsuit) .. I must be pretty lucky as mine is cranking away with no problems (knock on wood).
