Utilities In Japan

Postby spyder » Thu Jan 26, 2006 11:31 pm

Hello all. I have just recieved a letter in the post from Tokyo Water saying that the difference between the last bill to this bill is big, and they were wondering if anything was wrong. This is the first water bill I have recieved since moving to this place. There a few things I was wondering, and I cannot find the information on their website.

a) Water is heated by gas, right? Therefore, the more hot water I use, the higher the gas bill? Correct? My gas bill was also large, although I don't cook so often.

b) What are your regular water/gas/electricity rates for one month (I live in a one room place w/bathroom, kitchen.) Please PM me or Email me if you don't want your numbers public.

Thanks for the help!

I pay about 4-5000 for gas for a family of three. Water is about 4000 yen a month but I do A LOT of gardening.

Cooking uses a trivial amount of gas. Heating water is much more significant.

Do you have a leaky faucet, or a running toilet? You'd be surprised how much water that can waste.

I had a visit from the water guy to ask why my water consumption had doubled over a two month period. No real surprise as there are double the number of people in the apartment now but it was nice of them to check.

My bills are about 3k/month for gas, 4K/month electricity, 4k/2 months water. More than manageable.

If you are having more baths in winter that could explain why too.. those unit baths are short but they are also very deep and use a huge amount of water.

Damn. The search function will not do a strict search for "water bill" which we discussed in length about 2 years ago on the FG. Families with kids use a lot more water.

In Yokohama, my bills ran less than most gaijin: 2,300-3,500yen/month for gas, 3,500-4,500yen/month electricity, and 4,000yen every 3 months for water (I get a gimp discount on water).

We just got our most recent gas bill and that was 34000 for one month. That is for a family of four, and the gas is used to heat the house, heat the water and cook with. Aslo I live in one of the coldest damn places in Japan, Hachinohe Aomori. Not much snow but wicked cold wind off the Pacific. This am I got up at 5:00am to use the facilities and the temp in my room was a whopping1.3C.

I thought you were out so often that you rarely spend time in the house. Would it not be fairer to include bar tabs in your overall utilities total?

It's all those pints going down the loo that's eating up the water bill.

Basic energy efficiency techniques:
Install insulation, plastic sheeting over windows, closing off rooms, installing shutters on windows, caulking windows, taking shorter showers, using a kotatsu...

This month my electricity was 2,500 and my gas(hot water bill( was 2,400.
I dont pay for water, its included in my rent. Yeah gomi is right about those baths - they are damn decieving. My hot water costs went up 1,200 in one month because i had a couple of baths a week. Baths aren't really economical unless you are sharing the water with your family or someone. Damn like to see two people fit in my bath....

Hmmmmm! I suppose it's worth a try, but I only bathe once a season.

Yah, you're probably right! Well, my spring bath is not due until March, so we have time to consider it and as you say, I may not live that long anyway. So in the mean time, I hope one of those Yokohama trams runs over your smart ass!
