Brussels diplomats are expected to work tirelessly for the European cause, even in countries where most people have never heard of the European Commission. The job does, however, come with some perks - especially if you are the commission's top man in Tokyo. Bernhard Zepter, the German head of the EC delegation in Japan, receives a monthly accommodation allowance of 22,600 pounds [over 4,500,00 yen], it was revealed last week. The payments, funded entirely by the EU taxpayer, provide Mr Zepter and his family with a 600sq m four-storey house in the exclusive Moto Azabu neighbourhood in central Toyko...It is understood to be the highest EU accommodation allowance in the world and...it is about twice what the cream of Japan's international banking community typically pay in rent, and more per day than many Tokyo families pay for a month.
