[floatl]Image[/floatl]Japan Times: Salarymen go for bust in hostess heaven

...[A] growing number of salaried workers have been discovering to their chagrin that kyabakura can be a ruinously expensive habit, [creating the] phenomenon of kyabakura-induced bankruptcies...A 24-year-old retail store employee relates his own tale of woe. "Although my monthly take-home pay was only about 180,000 yen, I began visiting a club in Ikebukuro where this really nice girl worked. I wound up going four nights a week, with the bills more than 20,000 yen each time. Within a year, I'd spent over 2 million yen and was flat broke. I had no choice but to file for personal bankruptcy. Even though I blew so much money there, I never managed to get laid even once," he moans..."Clubs these days are targeting nerdy, unattractive men, especially inexperienced types like computer geeks," says Shinichi Kobayashi

Dimwit's Rule of Hostess Bars: If you have to pay people to talk to you, ya ain't gonna get laid by them.

Japan seems to have an overabundance of people who are extremely stupid with money, hence pachiko, hostess bars.

Stupid:- Salaryman who spend ridiculous amounts on simply talking to women only to end up bankrupt.
Smart:- Yakuza who run the establishments, rake in heaps on money, and screw all the hostesses, take pictures of it, and then sell them in urabon and DVD where they make even more money.

You resemble that?

oh.. oh! sorry.. mis-read that at first...

I like the "get laid" part, don't get to read that in newspapers much... they usually use other terminology.

Well, it is Mark Schreiber writing in Tokyo Confidential. I think Marvin's contributions to WaiWai shade him but they all do a good job. Time to mention Tabloid Tokyo again, I think.

The kyabakura story reminded me of an Onion piece from years ago: I Think That Stripper Really Liked Me.

The dude in the States who went to court over the some couple hundred thousand bucks put on his Amerex for lap dances and drinks in a strip club, comes to mind while we're talking about the stupid people thread!

Yes there are Ameriacns who are quite capable of blowing all their money stoopidly but what I think makes it more noticeable where is that Japan is a nation of savers. On average, Japanese have huge amounts of money locked into no-interest no-brain postal savings, and that doesn't include the nutters who squirrel away millions under the floorboards.
