Infamous Japan suicide spot sets grim record
TOKYO, Feb 6 (Reuters) - A record 78 Japanese apparently killed themselves last year in a thickly wooded area near famed Mount Fuji that is notorious as a suicide spot, police said on Thursday.
...police have posted signboards along paths in the forest that say "Please consult the police if possible before you (decide to) die"...

The J-police do need something to do, don't they? It's not like they can catch any wanted criminals. Wait, wait, I know. They spend all that time THINKING about preventing crime, right?

a grisly thing to check

Postby big_pear » Fri Feb 07, 2003 11:57 pm

That would really be a bit of a downer to be the officer that had that spot to patrol. Imagine, well I wonder if anyone killed themselves today? Are guns readyly available to the public, for a quick but usually messy way end one's life?
pears, are a nice shape to be. A klutz in the kitchen, i've burned water.

It`s a sad thing when a person`s fear of death is overtaken by a fear of life. :(

I hope the government is doing more to reduce this problem and not leaving it all to the non-profit orgs.
One is tempted to define man as a rational animal who always loses his temper when he is called upon to act in accordance with the dictates of reason. - Oscar Wilde

Some J-cops LOooooVE sucides. They are paid a bonus for "handling fees" as compensation for having to touch a stranger's corpse, a Japanese taboo.

At Tabata Station on the Yamamote Line, I've watched a few train jumpers, and then talked to the cops, station master, and EMTs as they collected the "bits."

Each guy got 20,000yen for handling the pieces, which the jumper's family had to pay after the fact (2,000,000yen fine!). One EMT snatched the loose head before the station master could get it and laughed saying, "[that's] cigarette money for the rest of year!"

The worst job in the world must be having to clean up after someone who has jumped in front of a train.
