I am going to be in Sapporo this weekend for the Snow Festival. Considering I have only two days (Saturday and Sunday), does anyone have any recommendations? Places to see, eat etc.. A J-colleague suggested I take the train to Otaru, but I don't know if two days are enough just to cover the snow festival itself. Any suggestions from FG's who have been/are there?
Alcohol, Tobacco & Firearms should be the name of a store, not a government agency.
I’d recommend just staying in Sapporo for the two days. I’ve never lived in Hokkaido, but I’ve traveled quite a bit there, and been to Otaru twice. There’s nothing in Otaru that will be of interest, unless you already know what you want to see (i.e., there are some places of interest for artists). Two days is a short vacation, if you had more time I’d recommend some other places to visit, but you don’t. Stay in Sapporo and post some pictures for us.
Mr Kobayashi: First, I experienced a sort of overpowering feeling whenever I was in the room with foreigners, not to mention a powerful body odor coming from them. I don't know whether it was a sweat from the heat or a cold sweat, but I remember I was sweating whenever they were around. - Otaru Onsen Oral Testimony -------------------------- Keep staring, I might do a trick. -------------------------- Noriko you whore!

The Snow Festival means spending a lot of time walking out-of-doors in the cold, especially during the cold night when the illuminations are more striking. You'll need to at least two days just to defrost for a warm-blooded fellow like you. Hell, even an old polar bear like me needed a couple liters of antifreeze after just one late afternoon and evening walking around.
I went to the Sapporo SNow festival last year and it was the best festival ive ever been to in japan, so Im sure you'll enjoy yourself. I also got that advice of -go to Otaru! - and I did, for half a day. It is very Russian there - the buildings, signs, look... you can see it used to be a rich place. If youve got half a day to spare, Id really recommend you going, take a break from the festival so youll appreciate it more!
2 Days is enough in Sapporo, theres not really much else there. I was disappointed I never had time to go to the Ainu Museum, but, thats life... >__<
