When did your favorite J-Idol "Jump The Shark"?

Postby Greener » Wed Dec 14, 2005 1:27 am

What moment did you realize that it was never going to get any better for your favorite idol stars? That torpedoe that cut 'em down so to speak. Here's a few classics for you:

Image

Pink Lady: The most famous idol duo in Japanese history also crashed and burned in the most famous fashion. On New Year's Eve 1978-79 PL, or their handlers, depending on who you believe, turned down an invitation to appear on Kohaku Uta Gassen (Red-and-White Song Contest, a long running and immensely popular TV talent show broadcast every New Year's Eve) in favor of a competing charity show on another network called Pink Lady Ase to Namida no Omisoka 150 Pun! (Pink Lady's 150 Minutes of Sweat and Tears on New Year's Eve!). In Japanese show business terms, this was the equivalent of passing on the Grammys to perform on a cable TV telethon in the same time slot. (info courtosy of pinkladyamerica.com) From that tragic mistake, it was all but over for PL as they would never have chart topping success again and would have to star on the worst American TV show of all time a year later.

Image

Onyanko Club: The cast of thousands that would inspire the creation of Morning Musume, made a tragic public miscue when they decided to go Dixie Chicks and get political during a tv special. Their popularity died right there and then and less than 6 months later would give their farewell concert.

Image

Hikaru Utada: Getting married, losing her looks (not that she was all that hot to begin with,) and her voice refusing to age well all happening at the same time. Nuff said.

Image

Ayumi Hamasaki: If she marrys a gay American, this would top Pink Lady's fall from grace.

Those are mine, how about your's?

I'm refering more to their popularity over quality.

Some may think this is non-PC but I can't resist ...

If she marries a gay American, shouldn't she change her name to Ayumi Homosaki.

Hey, speaking of the Kohaku, does anyone have a suggestion about how I can get a taped copy of this year's show? I presume this doesn't contravene the FG rules as it is broadcast free and it isn't like I'm asking for a bootleg of a paid show (I'm sure someone will jump all over me if this is a violation, real or imaginary).

Anyway, it's been a couple of years since I got the annual year end blast of mixed up pop tarts like Morning Musume plus old farts singing enka. But now my friend who sends me stuff like this has returned to the US, so no more tapes. I miss it.

I don't remember and for some reason, nobody ever discusses it. Even Idollica.com, the biggest western Onyanko fan on the fact of the Earth has never written about it. My guess was that it was pretty nasty.

New Shark Sighting:

Morning Musume:

Two departures over a 3 year period sunk MoMu like a stone. The first was the departure of Maki Goto. Maki was the prototype hyperactive kawaii girl that was everyone's favorite. (She was the sole reason to watch those HORRIBLE MoMu movies.) When she left, a huge part of the group's original charm was gone.

The second and final strike happened with the departure of Ai Kago. She was the heir apparent to Maki Goto and was goofy and cute. She also anchored 2 of the 3 most popular spinoff groups at HelloProject. (Tanpopo and MiniMoni.) The fact that H!P never replaced her with anything but generic cute girls has robbed the group of their soul and they haven't sold a decent amount per release since. (Has Tanpopo or Mini Moni even done ANYTHING since Kago left?)

While their entire premice is to graduate and replace the old with the new, it doesn't work very well very often in the music business. Even reality shows never regain what they had the first season when everyone is replaced. When you lose what made you likable in the first place, you lose your reason for being.

Chuck, if you get JapanTV, you can watch it at midnight on the night of the broadcast.

Or if there is a Japanese store near you, I'm sure they have a copy.

Unfortunately, I'm now in an apartment and I can't install ANY sat TV equipment, or I'd already have JapanTV. And the nearest Japanese video store I know of is 300 miles away, I haven't been there in 2 or 3 years, I don't know if it's even there anymore.

I had JapanTV through cable.

As far as jumping the shark..

Fumie Hosokawa - She wasnt ever that popular, but she was on quite often because of her sizeable rack. After she married an FG, she disappeared.

Well, I think Ayu's got a fair amount of talent, even if most of her songs bore me to tears. My wife is a huge fan of hers (sadly, she also loves Madonna) so I get to hear EVERYthing she does. Over and over and over and... I actually like some of the stuff on Duty, and not just because she's wearing that skintight leopard print body stocking.

Not that that HURTS, mind you.

I'd still take Ayu any day of the week over Madge.

Bah! MoMusu started sinking LONG before Gotou left. Love Machine (excellent though it was) was the beginning of the end. After Koi no Dance Site there was no hope for them at all. Tsunku got off two really good songs by sheer luck. After that it was just a quick downhill tumble. Tsunku was churning out song after song and the lyrics contained large swaths of nonsense and gibberish.

They're a long way from those first five timid girls singing Morning Coffee.

I sometimes lose track of threads.

Any ideas on how I can get that book and DVD?

Just for clarification, must something have been good once for it to have a jumping the shark moment? I wouldn't think so since I don't believer Happy Days was ever any good to begin with. I think the criteria to be applied is simply popularity: when did the person/show in question's popularity start sinking and what was the desperate act they took to keep ratings (or record sales, or whatever) up? That is the jumping the shark moment.

isn't that the point? good is always going to be subjective. but the people watching/listening think it's good, that's why they watch and listen. when they decide the act has gone too far to try and retain popularity they also think it's not good anymore. for an act to "jump the shark" means someone must have originally thought it was good. in the case of the singers in question that seems risible.

And here are some pictures allegedly showing her smoking while playing pachinko. She's been on hiatus since her brother was arrested for robbery and these pictures won't help her too much:
