News via AFP Wed Dec 14,12:38 PM ET, TOKYO---The son of famed Japanese animator Hayao Miyazaki, defying opposition from his father, will make his directorial debut next year with a film on the "Earthsea" fantasy novels by US writer Ursula Le Guin.
Goro Miyazaki, a 38-year-old former construction consultant, is directing the animation film for July 2006 release, according to Studio Ghibli, which has released his father's works.
"It may sound a bit abrupt but let me say this first -- my father Hayao Miyazaki was against my directing 'Tales from Earthsea'," his eldest son said without delving into the reasons....more...

Studio Ghibli announced that the NHK's program "Seikatsu Hot Morning" will air a 50 minutes long interview with Hayao Miyazaki from 8:30 AM to 9:25 AM on February 24. It is the first time that he guides the museum on TV. Ghibli says "It becomes valuable 50 minutes."

I was lucky enough to get a walking tour of the studios while they were making Howls'Movin'Castle.
The premises was smaller than I thought it would be and Oscars are heavier than they look.

Earthsea is a great series and it will be interesting to see how faithful they will be to the original novels. Not being Hollywood, I am hoping to be pleasnatly surprised.

I wouldn't be to hopeful about Miyazaki staying 100% true to the source material. He took a lot of liberties with his adaptation of Howl's Moving Castle, though he always respects the source material.

All screenwriters take some liberties, but I am hoping that he doesn't do what Peter Jackson did with 'Lord of the Rings'.

What do you mean? Jackson did a great job.

Well the script was seriously dumbed down for starters and for a book that runs over 1000 pages a third of the material in the movie was not from the book.

Miyazaki has designed the new Chunichi Dragons mascot. On the right is Toshio Suzuki of Studio Ghibli.

Earthsea the anime[/SIZE]
The Star, 23 July
.... Entitled Gedo Senki, the anime feature will be released in Japan at the end of this month. Interestingly, Miyazaki Goro, the son of famed animator Miyazaki Hayao, will direct this production. (Hayao was apparently still busy with Howl's Moving Castle when work on Gedo Senki began in October 2003.) ....

...Naturally, because Gedo Senki is a Studio Ghibli production, the media has been paying close attention to the movie's production process. However, their attention hasn't always been on the anime.
[floatr]Image[/floatr]
In fact the media was arguably more interested in the cold relationship that formed between Goro and Hayao during the making of Gedo Senki.

It all started when Hayao criticised his son's involvement in the movie. Goro in turn said in his director's blog that his father had "zero marks as a father, full marks as a director". Ouch. ...

.....Ah, nothing like a bit of family drama to spice up the film's promotional efforts.

Trailers

Second trailer: http://www.ghibli.jp/26trailer/

One ought to be immediately entranced by the wistful song that accompanies the trailer. Exotic costumes, medieval locations ... dragons ... beautifully rendered backgrounds ... (Though, curiously, many of the characters are fair-skinned while in Le Guin's world most are dark-skinned.)
