Japanese Red Army leader jailed

The woman who co-founded Japan's Red Army guerrilla group has been jailed for 20 years over a 1974 attack on the French embassy in The Hague.

A court in Tokyo convicted Fusako Shigenobu, 60, of kidnapping and attempted murder. In the Hague attack, the ambassador and 10 other staff were taken hostage in a bid to free militants in France. Two Dutch police officers were wounded. Shigenobu was arrested in Osaka in 2000, after about 25 years on the run.

If she'd "faced the music" back then, and done the time just after doing the crime, she would've been released in 1994 - 12 years ago.

Or, better still, if she'd not done the crime, ...

Anyway, it's something for her to think about over the next 2 decades.

I just don't understand the Japanese courts; 20 years for attacking a building... And attempted murder.. No one died.. Maybe she should've killed someone then ate them. She's be free..

Well, she was the leader of a group that killed perhaps 100 people through the years despite her sweet grandmotherly appearance.

Maybe not. The "peace loving" J-people were pretty incensed about being internationally drawn into the Lodi Airport clam bake and they may have well slam-dunked her, if they could have caught her during that time frame! Don't forget they also killed a cop (among others) in the Karuizawa free for all! They probably would have applied the well worn "sekininsha" charge to all of that, if they could have got their hands on either her or Okamoto at that time!

Great story on the Japanese Red Army by the War Nerd over at Exile, a "Moscow-based Alternative Newspaper."

http://www.exile.ru/2005-December-15/the_japanese_red_army.html

"JRA killers weren't squeamish that way. They never hesitated, always tried for maximum casualties. That's one of the weird aspects of their group: if the leaders of 1930s Japan had watched 1970s Japanese TV, the only people they'd be proud to call comrades were these commies of the JRA-because they were the real reincarnation of the Kamikaze spirit.

The craziest of all was their leader, a woman named Fusako Shigenobu-a pioneer in blasting the glass ceiling for women as CEOs of terror gangs. So how come she never gets mentioned in those feminist heroes lists? Cowards!

Fusako formed the JRA by quitting a less bloodcrazed hard-Left party and taking the crazies with her. It was 1970, same year Mishima did his last one-man show. She was more practical than that dreamy writer. Her boys didn't fool with swords; they stuck to automatic weapons. Because guns work, and swords are for Lord of the Rings dorks."

-Didn't the JRA also have some kind of horse-racing scheme going on at one time?

That is government based jockey club, the Japan Racing Association JRA, not the Japan Red Army JRA, but then again, now that I think about it???

For comparison, Sarah Jane Olson, the last fugitive from the Symbionese Liberation Army, was captured in 1999 and sentenced to prison (14 and 20 year sentences, running simultaneously) for a 1975 bombing and murder. She didn't actually kill the cop during the bank heist, but she was an accessory.
