[FLOATL]Image[/FLOATL]Puckett Dies After Massive Stroke

On the day Kirby Puckett retired from baseball, he tried reassuring everyone that the sadness of losing sight in his right eye wouldn't diminish the spirit fans had seen him show for 12 seasons in a Twins uniform.

"Kirby Puckett's going to be all right," he said in 1996. "Don't worry about me. I'll show up, and I'll have a smile on my face. The only thing I won't have is this uniform on. But you guys can have the memories of what I did when I did have it on."

On Monday, the sports world held those memories close as Puckett died in a Phoenix hospital, one day after suffering a massive stroke. He was 45.

The hospital said Puckett was given last rites and died Monday afternoon.

Puckett rose from a Chicago housing project and became a Minnesota sports icon, bursting onto the scene as a rookie in 1984 with an energetic style and an effervescent smile, each all his own.

He led the Twins to the World Series in 1987 and 1991, leaping into walls as their center fielder and swinging with a might that belied his stocky, 5-8 frame.

He often said he played every game as if it were his last, and sure enough, on March 28, 1996, Puckett awoke with blurred vision in his right eye.

He never played again. He was diagnosed with glaucoma and retired on July 12, 1996. ...more...

Wow..

Maybe this shouldn't be on FG.. It's not really Japan related.. Except!!

August 30:

- 1945 General MacArthur lands in Japan
- 1945 Hong Kong liberated from Japan
- 1987 Kirby Puckett goes 6-for-6 with 2 home runs in Minnesota 10-6 win over Milwaukee

Everything's related in 'The Da GuyJean Code'. ;)

Hey, he was big over here and a lot of J-teams wanted him. I was told he had offers (which he refused) from over here, even after his eye problem surfaced. They felt his name power was that big!

I loved that Chris Rock quote.. "Minnesota only has like 2 black people... Prince and Kirby Pucket."

AK, I don't know if you are saying that in jest or not, but, unfortunately, you may have hit it right on the head!

It's kind of funny but I ain't joking. People who've been lifting weights their whole lives don't just suddenly muscle up in their late thirties.

That's right and unfortunately, it's not been until relatively recent times, that the far reaching effects of these various additives hwererecognized, or even identified.

People have been taking the so-called "muscle-up", or "power enhancer" type of additives for as long as I can remember, both in and out of sports. Even the governator copped to use and said that everybody was using them back then. That's true. No one knew how bad they could be on the bod!

It's really sad for the people who ligitimately, or otherwise, got into the use of roids and other stuff during those times and are now suffering the after effects because no one knew. But, I sure don't have much pity for those who try these substances today, because the news and now, the laws are out there, so they have no reason not to know what they are getting into, or what can happen.

Actually, (and I'm not really saying this from experience.. but) my personal trainer once told me that steroids aren't too bad IF you take it in moderation. It isn't all too harmful if you take it for months up to the body building competition or whatever.. and then just STOP completely for a few months before retaking it. In fact, your muscles need some of the hormone for part of the regular maintenance and rebuilding. If you take it for years like Arnold, then you'll start having shrunk nads, protruding forehead, baldness, etc.
