The Register, 2006/mar/08/
Microsoft's 'Origami' is no more than a new user interface for a tablet PC - Intel's mini-tablet form factor Ultra Mobile PC (UMPC)...Wintel has been trying to make this kind of computer a success for 15 years, dating back to the WinPad, and Bill Gates hinted at a reborn Tablet almost a year ago.

....looks like a heck of a clunker. Great things should be expected next year, we were told.

Hhhhhmmmm.. Cool.. I guess.. Didn't Apple have one about 10 years ago? ;)

It's just the OS, right?.. Hhhhhmm.

The units look kind of thick.. I'm sure I wouldn't mind having one.. But it makes porn a challenge since you need both hands to hold it..

The problem with it is that it looks too big to fit in a pocket, goes through battery power like no tommorow, and no screen cover for it.

The thing is, you need a hefty processor to power the thing at 1Ghz and still run Windows XP. That's where all the battery life is going to. No keyboard either.

I'm sticking to my Sharp Zaurus SL-C3000 thank you very much. Here's hoping Sharp put out a faster model in future with a bigger hard disk.

Wouldn't that depend on the size of the software, or hardware you have?

The problem lies with the software developers. A small portable touchscreen device with wireless networking capabilities would be a great platform for several interesting products:
- Portable navigation w/GPS tied to Google Maps
- Control of corporate internal lighting, voice, and curtain systems
- Application for floor managers to see which VIP customers are at what tables in a casino in realtime

The biggest problem of these systems will be battery life. The NEC Pocket@i has a battery life cycle of about 5 hours, and it has a much smaller touch screen.
