Japan radish in intensive care after murder attempt

TOKYO (Reuters) - A giant white radish that won the hearts of a Japanese town by valiantly growing through the urban asphalt was in intensive care at a town hall in western Japan on Thursday after being slashed by an unknown assailant.

Breaking News Alerts The "daikon" radish, shaped like a giant carrot, first made the news months ago when it was noticed poking up through asphalt along a roadside in the town of Aioi, population 33,289.

This week local residents, who had nicknamed the vegetable "Gutsy Radish," were shocked -- and in some cases moved to tears -- when they found it had been decapitated.

Gutsy Gaijin can't get no respect or sympathy, radish wins the hearts.

Nah, HSH you missed the snide underlying point. It wasn't a good ole boy local daikon, it was an FG import. That's why it got decapitated!

I can understand why it got cut off growing where it should not have been, but the testament to it's FG status does not cut the mustard! It was obviously a native that had overgrown it's perimeters and had to be destroyed.

My question is why did it's demise elicit such sympathy among the natives?

The case is easily solved! Just seeing that much daikon showing, tells you to check the neighbor's misoshiro. That baby was gone at breakfast!

BBC: Japan tries to save giant radish
A giant radish is making the Japanese evening news headlines after it was rushed into intensive care in an agricultural research centre. The daikon radish, a staple ingredient in Japan, became an unlikely object of public admiration when it started growing through a pavement last year. The resilient radish was then attacked last year by a mysterious assailant. The local town council has since been trying to re-grow the radish from its severed top. It now hopes to extract its seeds or DNA.
Some helpful background from the BBC story:

Is he frowning on a stinking foot? No, the boy at a kindergarten on the Japan Sea island of Oki is just trying to pick up a rare foot-shaped radish brought by a local farmer who thought it might amuse the children.

MDN: New 'gutsy radish' sprouts up in Tokyo
A Japanese radish that has pushed its way up between the asphalt on a road and a roadside ditch has gained attention as Tokyo's version of the "dokonjo daikon," or "gutsy radish." The radish appeared in a residential area of the Tokyo city of Higashikurume, surprising residents and local government officials. "I have no idea how the seed got here," a puzzled Higashikurume Municipal Government worker said. Radishes sprouting up in unusual places have been reported all over Japan, but the area in Higashikurume where the radish was found is lined with supermarkets and apartment blocks, and there are no fields nearby.

The radish, which measures about 4 centimeters in diameter, apparently started growing under the asphalt and pushed up the wooden lid of a ditch as it got bigger. Its leaves span the width of a human hand and the radish can been seen from the road. The first radish to receive nationwide attention was a one growing through asphalt on a sidewalk in Aioi, Hyogo Prefecture. Impressed with its strength, Residents named it "Dokonjo Daikon" (gutsy radish). However its top was later lopped off by a vandal, causing it to wither. The radish was taken to an agricultural research center after the attack, and officials are waiting to see if it can be grown again.
