Does anyone know how they pumped the water thru those water bamboo garden feature things before the days of electric pumps?

Japanese invented gravity.

(Water fed in through excess from the rice fields, streams, piss ditches, as well as rain water tanks at a higher levels than the fountain. There's a hell of lot water falling on and flowing in Japan.)
