I bought another stick of 512mb from Crucial for my new iMac a few days ago, I had previously bought a stick of 512 for my iBook from them.
Yesterday it arrived, and later in the day I got a promo email saying if I bought ram during the next 7 days Id get a free flash drive.
I sent them a kiss-ass letter telling them how much I lurve their products and customer service & recommend them to everybody and low-and-behold I got an email back today saying theyd send me along a flash drive seeing as I made my purchase only a few days ago.

now, I fancy some yogurt... alot of yogurt...and those dairy products in the fridge taste funny all of a sudden... :p

I could upgrade my CPU, sure, but it's going to be cheaper to get a new Mac.

But my point is that I'm LOOKING to get a new machine and can't even see what I'm trying to get because thier using their latest tech on their website.

May wanna take a ride down to the Apple Store Then.

There is one about 10 minutes away from my house.

But I'm going to wait to see if I get accepted into a certain naval officer program. If I get in, I'll buy a MacBook Pro.

Hope so AO. I always pictured you as someone that was too old to enter the service. Good luck to you and let us know what happens.

It's a $100-more mac mini without seamless media center software that would put Tivo to shame. Bah.:-|

Well, there would have been an uproar by all the media "advocate" agencies like the RIAA and it's ilk.

That's because a "computer" could be used to put content saved from network TV online and it would also defeat the purpose of the iTunes store selling TV episodes.

Sure you could do it from a TiVo, but you gotta take the hard drive OUT to do it.

Huh, I never made the connection until now. (I've recently been reading 'Icon Steve Jobs the Greatest Second Act in the History of Business' - not recommended reading for people who enjoy accuracy, grammar and well-told stories, but it’s entertaining on some levels). This Imac/Luxo connection has probably been pointed out a few million times by more astute observers, but it just occurred to me now.
Mr Kobayashi: First, I experienced a sort of overpowering feeling whenever I was in the room with foreigners, not to mention a powerful body odor coming from them. I don't know whether it was a sweat from the heat or a cold sweat, but I remember I was sweating whenever they were around.

I finally took the plunge. I just ordered a Quad G5 with a Quadro FX 4500, and a 30 inch Cinema Display. And I got a $1200 discount through the Apple Developer program.

OK, then I won't tell you about the two 500Gb hard drives that I'm going to use as a Terabyte RAID 0.

You really deserve more power than a beige G3. Want to buy a used dual-1Ghz G4 MDD with 500Gb of hard disk? Hell, want to buy my old Blue & White G3/400U2W? Even that would be a major upgrade for you.

Thanks, but no.

Once I get into this Navy degree completion program, I'm going to buy a brand new Mac. (sometime this year)

I brought 3 computers to Japan. Other than the PC, a 1Ghz Albook and a dual 2.5Ghz G5 with 2 20" displays. Since we shipped all our clothes with Nippon Express, it made sense to include them.

I really need to stop being lazy here and do the videocasts I have planned....

If i have a useful amount of money and a need, I'll probably eventually get a second-gen MacBook pro.

The 30" is a technological wonder, it can display more porn pixels than anything on the market. And the Quad is the king of the hill, nobody comes close to that sort of raw processing power, I am betting that even the forthcoming Intel pro Macs won't beat it.

After spending way too many hours watching tedious training videos and trying to advance my skills on a G4 that is below spec, I decided to get totally serious about Maya and Shake. Now all I need is a paying client.

Indeed, the LG panel used in that display is awesome. I'm thinking about getting the Dell display that is based on the same panel. In the end I'll probably get a 24 and a 20 to run together instead.

I'd have to disagree with this I think:
http://www.tyan.com/products/html/thunderk8qe.html

I don't think there are any tier-1 makers using that board (yet?), but man, what an awesome workstation it would make. Equally awesome hole in your pocketbook of course -- a single Opteron HE 870 runs about 200,000yen right now.

There are some very impressive Opteron-based workstations though. It will be interesting to see how Intel's upcoming CPUs stack up against the top G5 and Opteron chips.

Oh, I didn't know LG made the displays. Nice. Personally, I'd rather have one large 30 than two smaller monitors. With monitors that wide, there'd be too much neck swivelin' fer me.

Very impressive. I can only hope that the machines they will release this year will be equally impressive. I have heard that OS X can support at least 8 dual core procs. Wouldn't that be cool?

Not going to take one apart to check, but from what I know it is the 30" panel you can find on this page:
http://www.lgphilips-lcd.com/homeContain/jsp/kor/prd/prd201_j_k.jsp
The page is in Korean but if you click on the LM300W01 model you will get specs. The English page seems to be borked.

mr. sparkle wrote:Personally, I'd rather have one large 30 than two smaller monitors. With monitors that wide, there'd be too much neck swivelin' fer me.

I find that if I have one massive display I end up either wasting a lot of the space on it or spend too much time arranging windows so that things fit. I'd use the 20" for things like web browsing and email, and the 24" for photo editing.

I think we'll see 4-core CPUs reasonably soon, probably before the end of 2007. Two of those giving 8 cores would be very nice indeed!

Windows runs on new Intel Macs
http://www.stuffmagazine.co.uk/hotstuffarticle.asp?de_id=1398
A programmer named Blanka has produced a video showing Windows XP running natively on a new Intel-powered iMac, thus winning a $13,854 prize. The iMac was dual-bootable, offering the choice of Windows or Mac OS at startup..

Yeah I saw that yesterday, two groups split the prize I believe, Narf and Blanka. You can download the loader here http://download.onmac.net/. you have to make your own custom install CD, hopefully someone will put it all into a torrent ready to go (I want one in Japanese though.. don't want to try and make one myself though)... yes I know I am lazy... shoot me..

Via TidBitsis news that my next Apple will be AMD not spawn-of-satan Intel...
When Apple announced in June 2005 it was planning to
transition its Macintosh computer line to Intel-based
processors, the entire Apple community was aghast: a move
away from PowerPC would be a historic turning point for the
company and its flagship computers. But a tiny portion of
the Macintosh community was aghast for different reasons.
They were thinking: "Intel processors? What about AMD?!"
Well, today at a press event in Mountain View, they got
their answer.

http://db.tidbits.com/getbits.acgi?tbart=08125

Apple Computer has announced a significant revision to its Xserve
line of high-end rackmount server and data-processing computers.
Like previous Xserves, the new units feature mammoth memory and
storage capacities, multiple high-speed networking interfaces,
and lightning-quick internal architecture. These are machines
made for high-end scientific computation, video rendering,
or mammoth Internet server applications. And, like Apple's recent
iMac, Mac mini, and MacBook Pro offerings, the new Xserves no
longer feature PowerPC processors. The difference is that rather
than being built around Intel Core Solo or Core Duo processors,
the new Xserves feature up to two dual-core AMD Opteron processors
running at speeds up to 2.8 GHz
Apple Unveils Software to Permit Windows Use
http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20060405/bs_nm/apple_dc_9
Apple Computer Inc. (Nasdaq:AAPL - news), the maker of the Macintosh computer and iPod music device, on Wednesday rolled out a first-ever software patch to run Microsoft's dominant Windows operating system on its PCs, a move that could draw millions of new buyers.

By enabling the move to Windows, the world's No. 1 operating system, Apple hopes to draw people who want Macs, considered by many as easier to use and more stylish, but prefer the Windows operating system.

Apple shares rose 5.7 percent in early trade on Nasdaq.

Apple said the "Boot Camp" software, available immediately as a download, enables Macs powered by Intel Corp. (Nasdaq:INTC - news) chips to run either Windows XP or Apple's Mac OS operating system software.
Wow.. This is moving faster than I expected..

Their stock went up 8% after that announcement too. It's clever in more than one way, the beta is time-limited. To continue using the feature, you have to buy Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard.

Actually it is great when you do need a box running windows for certain development environments and for various applications. We run macs but have to have a couple of windows machines around for this purpose.

We saw the announcement too and thought it was a good idea.

My former office was the same way. Now with Windows installed on a Mac it MUST also have antivirus software (which wasn't absolutely necessary with a only Mac OS X system before).:-|
