Calgary News: A 'spanky new cast' for The Fast and the Furious
It's enough to make fans furious. Neither Vin Diesel nor Paul Walker will be in the second sequel to The Fast and the Furious....Neal Moritz, who produced the two street-racing flicks, admits, "Vin talked to us about returning but that's not going to happen. Nor is Paul coming back for the third one." Instead, Moritz promises "a spanky new cast" and an exciting new location. "We're going to move the story to Japan where this phenomenon actually started and where it has been brought to a whole new level."

I am going to send in a tape. It is going to be the funniest... I am going to read the script. And I am going to yell it at the top of my lungs. I am going to act like the biggest ass possible. And it is going to be hilarious. And then they are going to have to watch it...

Now I need to get my head-mounted PongiCam(tm) video finished to satisfy the casting call requirements. http://www.finnhiller.com/fastandfurious.html

Well, this is a damn shame.

"Better Luck Tomorrow" was a genre-busting film that broke stereotypes of Asian-Americans. It looks like Lin is stepping into Hollywood, and going back to reinforcing stereotypes about Asians.

Can anyone tell if the lead role, the "Shaun" character is Asian or Caucasian? That would change the character of the film a lot if the role was an Asian role.

Its chock-full of fresh material like only knowing a few words of a foreign langage and using them to insult someone; "good evening, dumpling head"..?
They even take time out in the story to educate people about facets of Japanese culture they never wouldve stumbled across in every second newspaper article and page of a guidebook about Japan: "he said put your inside shoes on stupid!"
I guess they HAVE TO tell everyone what a gaijin is...
..Theres a black market for American made Levis blue-jeans in Japan!?!?

It says theyre casting for any ethnicity.. but the roles of the two guys seem to be American... so those without nationality or a good range of accents need not apply methinks.

Also, I think this movie will suck donkey balls.

I loved the first one, one of those great movies that's fun to watch (a handle of vodka helps) if you don't take it too seriously. Great way to figure out which guys in the car "scene" are too uptight for their own good... ask them what they thought about TF&TF. If they say they hate it, too uptight... 8)

Tsuchiya Keiichi is not even mentioned in there, but he is rumored to have a cameo appearance in the movie somewhere in the movie for some racing scene (duh).

[floatr]Image[/floatr]The Fast & The Furious: Tokyo Drift screeching onto PSP
Lifting the bonnet on the game of the film

PocketGamer.co.UK/news, 5/4/2006
We're not even going to bother with the details of the third film in the very popular but very silly The Fast and The Furious Hollywood franchise, other than to say that the tricked out, souped up action now takes place within Japan's underground drift racing scene.
If you're not familiar, drifting is all about getting a car to travel sideways for as long as possible, ideally linking corners together without having to straighten up in between them. It's all very impressive, show off stuff, and hugely admired in image-conscious Japan.
Tyre bills aside, it's also a lot of fun, which is why the prospect of capturing the said scene in video game form is definitely worth a spin.
Driving game specialist developer, Eutechnyx (which admittedly has yet to qualify at the very front of the video game racing grid with any of its past productions), is promising a revolutionary drift mechanic that caters for both beginners and experts. It's claimed a 'drift indicator' and a number of driving assists make this the most accessible, yet realistic, drift game to date....more...

Speed needs no translation

Postby Kuang_Grade » Fri Jun 09, 2006 2:21 pm

The tagline they are using the the states is
"speed needs no translation"

PR Plot summary from imdb
Shaun Boswell, who has always been an outsider. A loner at school, his only connection to the indifferent world around him is through illegal street racing -- which has made him particularly unpopular with the local authorities. To avoid jail time, Shaun is sent out of the country to live with his uncle in the military, in a cramped apartment in a low-rent section of Tokyo. In the land that gave birth to the majority of modified racers on the road, the simple street race has been replaced by the ultimate pedal-to-the-metal, gravity-defying automotive challenge ... drift racing, a deadly combination of brutal speed on heart stopping courses of hairpin turns and switchbacks. For his first unsuccessful foray in drift racing, Shaun unknowingly takes on D.K., the "Drift King," with ties to the Yakuza, the Japanese crime machine. The only way he can pay off the debt of his loss is to venture into the deadly realm of the Tokyo underworld, where the stakes are life and death.

Man, this going to suck so hard, I might have to go see it just for the giggles....I can only hope that the 'Yakuza crime machine' pulls a Voltron at the end.

The worst american movie set in Japan is Karate Kid 2. I think they're aiming to top that by once again trying to convince people that Japan is a dangerous place.

Saw it tonight, and it was surprisingly good. Not award winning by any means, but very fun and it managed to avoid nearly all of the problems the first two films suffered from. For the first time they actually got the racing scenes right (as in entertaining and exciting with minimum CG, not necessarily accurate).

Nothing amazing, but above average for this level of movie. If nothing else it's interesting and can be fun trying to spot where they used CG to make it "Tokyo." The only time the CG is really distracting was during a coupel scenes in SHibuya at Hachiko crossing (think that's the name?).

I have a suspicion that Lost in Translation was a large influence on Tokyo Drift. The story itself is something like a cross between Fresh Prince of Bel-Air (seriously), Lost in Translation and the original Fast and The Furious. A couple of the scenes really felt like they were going for a similar mood to LiT, but obviously the overall effect wasn't quite the same.

Postby Yorik » Sun Jun 25, 2006 12:05 am

Saw it last night, I am a bit car nut, have been racing on and off the streets for 15 years, the Fast and the Furious movies have always been a bit of a strange thing for me. With the amazingly obvious inaccuracies in the movies, tearing me from the somewhat partially accurate depiction of the street racing scene, I have always been at war with my feelings for the movies. I found this movie to be not as bad, they didn't go into the technical sides as much, which was good, but the story line lacked a little.

Not to sure on the accuracy for Japan, but I actually liked the movie and will probably watch it again in the future. A few surprise cameo's from the world of Japanese drifting were excellent and the use of a few D1GP cars really set it off, not that the general public will understand, but it was nice for those that pick it out.

My friend the Filthy Critic offers his opinion here: Fast and the Furious 3: Tokyo Drip
The Fast and The Furious 3: Tokyo Drift is as stupid and senseless as a 3 a.m. drunk puking in some stranger's convertible. Believe me, I know. I meet plenty of them when I drive the Falcon to the Tavern. Anyone with a third-grade or better education would have to suppress logic like Candy Bottoms can suppress her gag reflex to write, direct or act in such low-level, idiotic crap. You know you're at the center of a shitstorm when the villain, who is standing three inches away, says to the hero, "You and I, we aren't so different." That a retarded person such as Chris Morgan was able to learn to use a a computer and scriptwriting software is a monumental accomplishment, though. It is beside the point that it all makes not one lick of sense. Retards made a movie!

What's sad is that there will no doubt be an increase in the out of control hoons behind fast cars on public streets, and innocent people will die . . .

This is from the previous instlament:

Drag Race Deaths, Fast Film Linked

CBS News wrote:William Lacasse Jr. had just pulled out of a gas station in his mother's Corvette when two cars zipped by and flashed their hazard lights at the 17-year-old in a challenge to race.

Lacasse floored it.

Moments later, he crashed into a concrete light pole and was killed - another victim in a string of deaths around the country that some are blaming on "2 Fast 2 Furious," a movie about street racers that hit theaters three weeks ago.

Illegal street racing has been around for decades, but police departments are stepping up traffic patrols around some theaters for fear drivers will try to imitate the risky stunts in the movie, the follow-up to 2001's "The Fast and the Furious."

Teenagers "think drag racing is a movie," said Miami police Lt. Bill Schwartz. "They don't understand that those people are stunt drivers, and that they can get killed."

Universal Studios said in a statement that any attempt to link accidents to its movie is unjustifiable and would "confuse cause and effect." The studio also fended off similar criticism of the 2001 movie.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said that connecting fatal crashes to drag racing is difficult but that the year the first movie came out, at least 135 people died in accidents from possible races. That is almost twice as many as the year before.

In South Florida, at least nine people have died from illegal street racing in the past three years, according to the Florida Highway Patrol. No figures for previous years were immediately available.

In California, at least two deaths have been linked to the new movie, including that of a 15-year-old boy who was mowed down by a 13-year-old drag racer while playing basketball outside his home. In Georgia, a 17-year-old girl on her way to see the film died when her friend's car crashed in a race.

Lacasse's death June 6 in Miami was among several Florida accidents blamed on the release of the sequel. A racing accident in Miami hospitalized two families]at more than 120 mph[/B]. The CHP said the six had ticket stubs in their cars indicating they had just seen "2 Fast 2 Furious."

. . . Police in Boca Raton, Fla., stepped up patrols outside a theater as well and issued a remarkable 52 tickets for speeding and reckless driving on the movie's opening night . . . more

MercuryNews: Black drives around the fast track in "Tokyo Drift"
Q What was it like for you as a country boy going to Tokyo?

A It was pretty crazy over there. I am from a small town in Alabama and grew up in the country. Going to Tokyo, it took three days and then you kind of get into the swing of things. We went to a couple of authentic restaurants for a while and ate some Japanese food. Then we started hanging out at Tony Roma's, because we kind of wanted to get back home and get some real American food. There was a McDonald's, actually, at the bottom of our hotel, and you know, the first week I was there, I didn't really eat there. But after that you could find me there. I would have to switch it up; I would get the fish sandwich and then the chicken sandwich because you didn't want to eat the same thing over and over.

I just saw this and I liked it. I really cracked up when Rie Shibata came up on screen. I liked the nice touch of one of the main characters from the first movie showing up at the end of the movie. Nice way to actually end the series. I doubt that there will be any more.

When I play Need for Speed Underground 2, I prfer the drift mode over all others.

I just saw that a few weeks ago. The movie thankfully didn't have the technical errors that plagued the first movies. I'm surprised I didn't really see any Subaru's though. :(

I'm still trying to figure out the comment on the "$10,000 standalone fuel management system" (did I quote that right?) from the first movie. I paid $150 for my S-AFC II and it suits me just fine. Even the more expensive EMS' don't typically run more than 1-2k.

Fucking redneck.

I enjoyed the movie, but I've also been into drifting since I first got my license. I used to go to sanctioned amateur events in North Jersey.

Since the film, every spoiled little 17 year old American brat has bought up all the Silvias, 350z's, RX-7's (my old car), and Truenos. They have been crashing them all over the place. I wrecked my RX-7 in a non-racing accident, and got double the money for selling the engine than I would have before the film. Rear-wheel drive imports on E-Bay all skyrocketed just like Civics and Eclipses after the first one.

And yesterday, Need For Speed: Carbon came out in the States as well, based on, can you believe it, illegal mountain drifting. The commercial even portrays a red Evo VIII (like the one the redneck drives in 3 Fast 3 Furious) and an american muscle car sliding around a mountainside pass.

Here comes the meatwagon...

I just saw it, and I have to say for once it wasn't a complete waste of my time.

Took me a while to get used to the main character being the redneck from Jarhead, but the race against that rich kid (wow... you can read a brochure!) cured that one real quick ;)

It also struck me how hard they tried to break the cliché of asian girl = no tits. Never seen so much pushup action packed into 90 minutes.
