NJR: NCAA Final 4 - UCLA is in it, baby!

Postby kamome » Wed Mar 29, 2006 1:31 am

Anyone here a UCLA fan? They are in the Final Four for the first time since 1995!

UCLABruins.com wrote:NO. 7 (AP)/NO. 8 (ESPN/USA TODAY)/NO. 2 SEED UCLA (31-6/14-4, PAC-10 REGULAR SEASON/TOURNAMENT CHAMPIONS) THIS WEEK IS PLAYING IN THE NCAA FINAL FOUR FOR THE 16TH TIME IN SCHOOL HISTORY AND WILL FACE THE NO. 19/NO. 18/NO. 4 SEED LSU TIGERS (27- ON SATURDAY IN INDIANAPOLIS]DEFEATING NO. 3 SEED GONZAGA, 73-71[/U], IN A STIRRING COMEBACK ON THURSDAY AND NO. 1 SEED MEMPHIS, 50-45, ON SATURDAY[size=84]. Overall, this is UCLA's 40th appearance in the NCAA Tournament. UCLA holds the record for most championships won (11 in 1964-65-67-68-69-70-71-72- 73-75-95) and longest winning streak - 38 games between 1964 and 1974.

Anyone catch these games? Pure defensive domination, baby, yeah!

Sweet! The "experts" are saying that LSU will win this weekend, but they also said GMU didn't have a prayer. My rule: beware conventional wisdom.

Actually, I'm a San Jose State guy. But we never have a good team in anything.

I root for Cal 'cause my step-bro went there. I root for UC Davis because my bro-in-law is the Athletic Director there. It was awesome when UCD beat Stanford in football.

Anyway, I'm sitting here waiting for the UCLA game to start. Should be a good game.

My boys at Mason finally met their match. They just went down. What a year though.

UCLA! UCLA! UCLA!
UCLA 59, LSU 45

Bruins' Stingy D Turns Tigers Into Cats

The Bruins put the glove on LSU so tight that the Tigers missed 34 of 50 shots (32 percent). They also shot a sparkling zero percent from the 3-point line (0-for-6). Even when there was no one guarding them, the Tigers couldn't make a thing. Try 13-for-28 from the foul line.

"I thought our intensity defensively for the entire 40 minutes was really, really incredible," said UCLA coach Ben Howland. "That's the best defense we've played all year."

After a while, the only question was whether the Tigers could break the 40-point mark. They did, with 1:22 remaining.

The Bruins' defense makes grown men cry. LSU senior guard Darrel Mitchell was in full tear mode as early as 4:29 left to play. You'd cry too if your career ended in a blowout and you shot 3-for-9.

This is what happens when you play a UCLA team where every player seemingly has four arms. The Bruins held Memphis to a season-low 45 points in the regional final, and then held the Tigers to a season-low 45. UCLA owns the nation's longest win streak (12), which figures. Opponents are averaging just 53.9 points in those 12 consecutive Bruins victories.

I watched the game from start to finish. All I can say is, if UCLA plays the same way they did tonight, they are getting that championship. It was the best basketball I've seen from UCLA. They really put on a clinic.

They were better in football when I was there. It would be nice for UCLA to bring home a championship to balance out USC's football program.

Dick Vitale is predicting UCLA to lose. That scares me, because he's been pretty accurate with his other picks in this tournament. He was the only one among ESPN's crew to predict UCLA to get to the Final Four. Now he thinks Florida is going to outrun UCLA on the floor. We'll see.

He could be right. FLA just looked so smooth out there in their crushing of Mason. We'll see all 'bout 'dat tonight. Wish I was in NY, K. We could drink some brews and root for UCLA over those FLA yahoos. ;-)

That would be fun. I know no one out here with any connection to the West Coast, let alone UCLA.

UCLA looked equally smooth out there when it drove LSU to tears. Like I said, they ran a clinic. I think this is going to be about who can impose its style onto the other team and take them out of their game plan. A run-'n-gun type of game would favor Florida. A slow, half-court approach would favor UCLA.

Florida is up 36-25 at the half! Where the hell is that vaunted defense of the Bruins? They've got 12 fouls already. They better get to hiking when they come out! Florida's offense looks like its got them stymied!

Florida wins 73-57! Florida shot .448 from the field; .316 on threes and .750 from the line! UCLA was .361;.176 and .714.

The Bruins defense sucked and dragged the offense down with them.

Well, there is next year!

It wasn't that their defense sucked; they were just too slow out there. They couldn't run up and down the court with their opponent. They also needed to hit more shots. Their offense was not as good as it should be. But it was a really hard fought game with a lot of intensity and lots of monster dunks, which always makes for good entertainment.

Where's a good beer when you need one? :cry2:

Thanks, AK. They fought damn hard all the way through the tourney. I hope this improves recruiting and gets UCLA closer to its glory days.

I had a feeling FLA would dominate. They looked like a pro team out there. As much as I wanted UCLA to win, you could see who was the best team in college round ball last night.

On a happier note, opening day was yesterday. Looking forward to some baseball games this year. Go Giants!
