Dog lovers mad over chihuahua thefts
Reuters.co.uk, Mon Nov 21, 2005 5:58 AM GMT7
TOKYO ---
Japanese pet owners are howling over a spate of thefts of chihuahuas, the country's most popular dog thanks to a series of TV commercials that starred one of the cuddly Mexican canines.
The dog, from condominiums and houses across Tokyo over several months, show the dark side of a pet boom in Japan, where the number of dogs and cats exceeds the number of children...
Because there is no official system to record their origins, the loveable lapdogs are much easier to sell than stolen jewels and, with a price tag of some $2,000 (1,200 pounds). almost as enticing....more...

It's not great news for other breeds, though...

MDN:Hostesses hounded by gifts of unwanted pricey pooches
"Loads of customers have recently started giving nightclub hostesses little dogs as presents in the hope they'll be able to woo them. Dogs are little bit out of the ordinary and, as a present, they have a bit more impact than the average brand name goods," a hostess in Tokyo's Roppongi nightclub district tells Shukan Taishu (10/24). "...But, there are so many guys out there with the same idea, some hostesses are apparently getting as many as four dogs as presents. They can't look after the dogs, so just dump them. I feel really sorry for the poor dogs"...more...

I'm sure I read somewhere that the original chihuahua featured in the Aiful ads has not been seen of late by his co-star. It is rumoured that he died from the stress of all the attention

Man I hate those ratdogs. Fugly little fuckers.
And you run and you run to catch up with the sun but it's sinking
Racing around to come up behind you again
The sun is the same in a relative way, but you're older
Shorter of breath and one day closer to death

Aiful troubles hit Chihuahua sales, popularity
The Yomiuri Shimbun, April 26, 2006
The popularity of chihuahuas as pets has fallen after major consumer loan company Aiful Corp., which used the breed in its television commercials, was reprimanded for its aggressive loan collection practices earlier this month.
The small dogs attained rock star status almost overnight when the commercials first aired a few years ago and commanded prices of 600,000 yen at the peak of their popularity in 2002 and 2003, according to a major pet shop operator in Tokyo.
Since the Financial Services Agency ordered Aiful to suspend some operations at all its branches on April 14, orders for the dogs at pet shops have started drying up, pet dealers said.
"We sold a female puppy for about 150,000 yen in February, but the price has fallen by up to 20,000 yen after the Aiful news was reported," said a pet shop owner in Urayasu, Chiba Prefecture. "We used to get orders for white chihuahuas similar to the one in the ads, but not anymore." ...more...

Ahh, another flash trend fizzles out in Japan. Wonder what they will do with all the leftover pooches?
Ship them back to Mexico or do what they did when the Finding Nemo craze died out...

I knew there was something weird about chihuahuas. Behind that cute cuddly exterior they're just thugs. Loan sharking dogs!
