Roadside Japan

Postby dimwit » Thu Mar 30, 2006 2:03 pm

I found a fascinating photo book last night called 'Roadside Japan' by Kyoichi Tsuzuki. Highly Reccomandable if you can find it.

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/489366641X/002-8238825-7221615?v=glance&n=283155

It is visual gold mine of some of the more cheesey roadside attractions. Some of which have been discussed here such as Gunkanjima or Jesus in Aomori

But the Moai of Miyazaki?

or the Versailles Palace Middle School in Oyabe?

So my question to all of you is:

I liked the fake Kinkakuji up against the side of a mountain in in a little coastal town along the east coast of Hokkaido. I ran across it one day driving down the coast but I never quite figured out what town it was in.
Here's a picture I took, you can see a tiny bit of the mountain in the background, behind the railing in the lower left of the pic.

Those unmanned fruit and veggie stands where you "volunteer" to pay the price they ask, which I never do, but recently the ones I favor, have installed cam-recorders.

:ninja3:

Humph! I won't be giving them any more of my business.
Stay on the bomb run boys. I'm goin' to get them doors open if it hare lips everybody on Bear Creek.

Lol. I'm sure they will be upset. :D

They don't know who to throw tomatoes at.

But, they'll be sorry when I'm gone!

We had a fake Kinkakuji in Matsuyama as well but it was washed away in a typhoon to the great regret of no one.

For a really good time you could always try the Abashiri Prison Museum where you can take take a bath with yakuza wax dolls.

Indeed an interesting book. That one museum in the book with the rape display seemed insane. If you look at the photos taken of the world's tallest statue - the Buddha in Ibaragi - you'll see they miss the goofy, smiling Ronald Reagan bronze plaque posted near the yatai stands. How could such a book miss a great opportunity? I think I have a photo of it in my files. Let check.

You have Prime Minister Takeshita to thank for many of these. His "Furusato Sosei" plan in the closing years of the bubble gave every minicipality a grant of 100 million yen to use as they pleased to rejuvenate the local community and stimulate tourism.

Years ago when I lived in the middle of Mie-ken there was a tiny theme park called "New Zealand World". I kick myself now for never going in to see what the hell that was all about..
