Firefox - your new J-helper!

Postby Caustic Saint » Wed Mar 29, 2006 10:55 am

If you're running Firefox and don't like taking time away from your browsing to look up Japanese words in a real dictionary (paper or electronic), check out rikaichan.

Rikaichan is a Firefox extension that adds some serious dictionary functionality. Don't know what a Japanese word means? Just hover your pointer over the word and a detailed dictionary listing pops up. It's even got a toolbar (you can toggle it on and off) for manual J->E lookups.

Quite possibly the most useful Firefox extension ever. :)

I will try to use this at my new job.

I'll need it.

Thanks for the heads up CS.

Wow. Just grabbed this 5 minutes ago and it's nice. I used to use moji ages ago (I think as a Mozilla plug-in), but rikaichan seems quite a bit smoother. If memory serves, when I was using moji, the UI was bothering me enough that I just took to using the home page at rikai.com when I really wanted popup translations.

The nice thing about rikaichan compared to rikai.com is that the site owner of rikai.com doesn't get info about all the perverted pages I'm reading.

I'm glad everybody's finding it useful. Like I said in the first post, though, the real credit goes to Steve, as I found it on his site.

Moji only works from Firefox 1-1.5 (dosent work well/at all after 1.5 - current version = 1.502?)

I usually just use a combo of jim breen and rikai, but ill be sure to install this now :)

Nobody's written a plug-in which makes my memory work properly, unfortunately :-)
