Subtitling Japanese Films

Postby Mulboyne » Sat Apr 22, 2006 5:05 pm

[floatr]Image[/floatr]Here's an old interview with Linda Hoaglund who produced the subtitles for the international DVD release of Akira Kurosawa's films.

Never More Than 80 Letters
In the six years since I began writing English subtitles for Japanese films, I have worked on over 80 films...I render the dialogue of confused, angry, willful, and mischievous characters into a series of individual subtitles, always less than 80 letters long...For me, the process of translating and condensing Japanese dialogue into English is visceral. I experience the character's emotions in Japanese, but express them in English, two languages that could not be more disparate...A child of liberal American missionary parents, I was raised in rural Japan and attended Japanese schools...My unusual childhood seems to have left me with two separate but parallel brains, which allow me to hear in one language and experience in the other. In subtitling Japanese films, I highlight universal human elements by focusing on the essence of the characters and their communication, then "re-writing" it in English...more...

On the extras disk in the US release of The Yakuza Papers - Battles Without Honor & Humanity, she is interviewed about her efforts on doing the subtitles on these linguistically colorful films. It's not very long but I found it interesting

Jason Gray, who does some subtitle work himself, notes that Linda Hoaglund has a new website which has more articles and interviews.

Was it the hat, the glasses, the comedy bowtie, the gaudy pastel-coloured suits, or the incessant self-promotion? :p

LOL!
Rob you really walked into that one didn't you!
I just read something today in a mens' magazine about how women are attracted to a man who is not afraid to be the butt of jokes, it shows self confidence.
Looks like our hero Rob may be the most confident person in all of Japan!
