looking for frog bits

Postby gomichild » Mon Apr 17, 2006 2:32 pm

There are two recipes I'm hanging out to make - but I need to find frog meat for them.

Apparently Japan is a producer and exporter of a lot of frog meat - but I've yet to come across it in normal places.

Any suggestions or locations where you've seen it available?

Just about last week, I was just telling Taro I eat frog meat too (and other stuff that I dare not mention here.) If you go to Singapore, you must go to Geylang area to eat frog meat. Here is a website I found, expensive- Yen 2800/kg. If you find some other place that sell do let me know.

Since we're trading frog-buying tips from around the world... I live two blocks from San Francisco's Chinatown, and a couple of fishmongers I frequent carry live frogs. And they're huge -- must weigh a couple of pounds each. I haven't been game enough to buy one yet (I assume they'll kill and clean them for me), but I've heard lightly battered and fried is quite tasty.

Cheers tinateoh. Singapore was heaven - frog congee everywhere!

Jacksonwest - frog meat rocks. Light and battered - good, or used in place of chicken meat - much less fatty than chicken.

State nicknames

Postby cliffy » Tue Apr 18, 2006 5:04 pm

Why am I not surprised GC? You are from South Australia, the Crow Eater State! Are weird dietary prefrences a requirement for citizenship?*

BTW I like cured Emu like prosciutto, 'Roo and 'Bush flavourings' but find croc expensive and disappointing. Never tried frog, but Goanna is very oily and only available to 'traditional hunters' and guests as a cultural thing, they can keep it.

*Untill recently South Aus considered itself a country of it's own, sharing a land mass with the Australian states grudgingly.

Throw another crow on the barbie! (Whoah that's an interesting idea for a new business - yaki-kurasu - almost an endless supply!)

Gotta be careful with croc meat - some can be good, some can be like rubber.

(btw one of the supas near here has been stocking shark steaks regularly - yay!)

For some reason, "eating frog meat" reminded me of this joke:

Q: How does a French lady hold her liquor?

A: By the ears!

I still love the original comment about loving reptile meat. Eel, frog, snake, croc, chicken -- it's all protein! Seriously, though, I did have turtle and alligator Down South, and it is pretty good. Turtle soup and alligator frites especially. And you're right: Not only higher protein-to fat, but Omega-3 fatty acids to boot.

So as long as it's ugly, you'll eat it?

No, I don't eat anything as long as it is ugly, I just said it indeed looked ugly and NOT yummy which Taro tried to show in the images. It is quite common in Singapore and I eat it because it does taste good. Ok, as for dogs, besides it looked cute, I like their character very much, I think they are man's best friend..so the feeling of eating dogs is like eating your friend.

I knew a girl once who would eat anything so long as it was as long as it was ugly...

No. Unfortunately she let her toe nails get too long and ended up like old ouroboros. ;)

Do Ozzie cane toads have poisonous skin?
Back in Hawaii the cane toads secrete a poison that, for some reason the dogs like to lick off of them. It sends the dog into a semi-paralysis that causes them to lie on their sides for a few hours. I used to live up a narrow valley road and after a good rain the toads would come out and when driving you would have to watch the road for paralyzed dogs (and toads...).

Not only do they have poison but they are exactly the same species. Bufo Marinus. They were introduced in 1935 from of all places Hawaii!

Yep that's the bugger, Hawaii can have them back since we are not allowed to kill the little pests anymore as it is too icky. ( You can be arrested and charged with Animal cruelty here in Bananabenderland if you do) Yes you cannot try to control a feral pest that you can be charged and fined if you don't try to control....... bloody Heller and his 'Catch 22' idea it is doing my head in.....
