He mumbles at me "What country are you from?" Which throws me into confusion - what the hell does it matter? We all gotta fill in the same forms. To humour him I say "Australia", which prompts him to gesticulate and shout wildly for a stack of forms and English instructions to a little man zipping behind towers of paper.

Ah, well that explains it.

Maybe you could answer "Japan".

So are we to refer to you as a "Scary nude romping girl"?
If so we will need pictorial evidence ;)

Oh dear... this is worrisome. If they're petrified of a cute Australian girl, I shudder to think what reaction they might have seeing my ugly mug. I'm just hoping when I come visit Japan, I'm not met at Narita by the JSDF and a couple of Mazer support cannons.(Grin)

I hate the panic moment as much as any gaijin -- train seat panic, restaurant panic, banking panic, etc. But there is one regular panic event that I have fun with.

My local supermarket has a point card system (like most shops these days) and the check out chicks need to ask every customer whether they have a point card before processing their purchases. While the old hands know me, the new check out chicks never seem to ask me if I have a point card. When I first approach the register they look up to see my face and then freeze for a split second in indecision and then go about ringing through my items without saying a word. But I’ve been standing in line behind 3 or 4 people and I heard her ask everyone else whether they had a point card. But she didn’t ask me.

So when she’s finally rung through all my items, usually some 20 or 30 goods, I place my point card on the tray and savor the look on her face when she realizes that she will have to re-process all of my items much to the annoyance of the customers standing in line behind me. Fuck them. And fuck you check out chick.

My supermarket has a high staff turnover rate - - I hope that I am partially responsible for that. :)
Mr Kobayashi: First, I experienced a sort of overpowering feeling whenever I was in the room with foreigners, not to mention a powerful body odor coming from them. I don't know whether it was a sweat from the heat or a cold sweat, but I remember I was sweating whenever they were around.
