Up until around 1999, a policyholder who committed suicide needed only to have belonged to an insurance scheme for a year for their family to be eligible for a payout.

Most companies extended this minimum eligibility period to two years, sometime around 2000. American Family Insurance, however, extended the period to three years.

Since 2004, Meiji Yasuda Life Insurance Co., Sumitomo Life Insurance Co., and Nippon Life Insurance Co. have extended the period to three years...

One year, two years and now three years! What's next? Working for the money???

Cambodian backwater in euthanasia website rumpus
Come to sunny Kampot - then kill yourself

The Register. Wednesday 9th November 2005 12:33 GMT
The governor of the Cambodian province of Kampot has initiated legal action against an American internet cafe owner who promoted the area as the ideal place to commit suicide, Reuters reports.
Roger Graham's http://www.euthanasiaincambodia.com and http://www.asian-hearts.com (both currently offline) both carried the banner: "You're going to die anyway, so why not in Cambodia?" which provoked around 50 complaints....
Governor Puth Chandarith said: "A lot of foreigners were scared to stay here when they learnt about the Web Site saying Kampot was a good place to commit suicide with no pain." Accordingly, he has filed suit against Graham for "disseminating false information" and "defaming the province"....
.....Cambodia has no legislation regarding euthanasia and, according to Reuters, "diplomats say it does not rank as a high priority in one of Asia's poorest nations".

Welcome to Asian-Hearts. This page is written by an advocate for Euthanasia in Cambodia. You can in Cambodia!

I've read all this. Take me to the Pictures

This is a terrific place. For those of you who want to complete your lives in conquest and adventure, there is plenty of that to be found. For those who just want a peaceful and painless death, living your dreams until the moment of your death, then this could be the place for you.

Pharmaceuticals are available over-the-counter. No prescriptions needed. Many drugs not available in the US are readily available here. The cost of drugs here is so incredibly low as to make the thought of what people are paying in the states laughable.

But be forewarned, if you are coming for treatment, it is minimal. This is the place to come to die. In whatever manner you choose.

Time moves here at it's own pace. You can make decisions daily and feel no pressure to do otherwise. Your life in Cambodia is your own. Take an elephant ride up into the hill tribes. Visit the spectacular waterfalls in Rattanikiri province, or see the beaches at Sihanoukville. Fine restaurants and luxury accommodations are readily available. While you wait for your time, there is plenty to keep you happy.

Do you have a skill? You can probably put it to use over here. The people love to learn. English is spoken by many, and more are learning it every day. I teach English for a couple of hours a day. That is no trouble for me and it is enough to pay my rent. Jobs like this are readily available. Or perhaps you'd rather volunteer? You can in Cambodia! They want you here!

I'm nearly 60 years old and in a few more years will begin to collect my Social Security checks. Those checks will be automatically deposited into my US bank account. I can then request a periodic wire transfer to get the money into my Cambodian bank account. If you are concerned, I can help you with this.

Personal, 24 hour a day care, including cook, laundress, and housekeeper might cost $30 or so per month, depending on the level of service you need. I have begun to develop a nurses registry of qualified care-givers with experience dealing with the elderly, disabled, and dying. Let me know if you have special needs and I can help you find a suitable care-giver.

Accommodations vary from spartan to luxurious. I have a 2BR/2B western style apartment on the riverfront. It has a terrific view of the morning sunrise and in the evenings I can watch the ever changing promenade of people and traffic below my balcony. Excellent restaurants are within a short walk, but I can ask my personal moto driver to take me wherever I wish.

The Buddhist religion is non-judgmental. The saffron robed monks walking the streets of Phnom Penh can assist with your pre-arranged cremation process. And costs are nothing to speak of. I can help you make those arrangements. It really is possible to live your dreams until you die. You can in Cambodia!

Four dead in group suicide

http://www.smh.com.au

Four bodies were found today in a car parked in a mountainous area near Tokyo, in an apparent group suicide, police said.

The four - three men and a woman believed to be in their 20s to 30s - were found in the car, which was parked at an empty lot near a forested area in Tokigawa Village just outside Tokyo, a Saitama prefectural police spokesman said.

The four were believed to have died of carbon monoxide poisoning, he said.

Police found several portable stoves containing burned coal inside the car, the official said.

Car windows were sealed with packing tapes from the inside, the Kyodo News agency said. The four had no apparent external injuries, and left no suicide notes, Kyodo said.

Japan has been the scene of many suicide pacts in recent years, several thought to have been devised by people who met over the internet.

Last year, 55 people in 19 groups committed suicide after meeting on the web, up from 34 dead in 12 groups in 2003, according to National Police Agency figures.

Suicide pacts have been made over the internet since the late 1990s, and have been reported everywhere from Guam to the Netherlands. Experts say they tend to occur in cycles, with news of group suicides sparking copycat incidents.

Number of Japanese killing themselves in groups after meeting through the Internet -- strangers afraid to die alone -- soared to a record
nearly double that of 2004, police said
No religious prohibitions exist against taking one's own life in Japan, where suicide was once a form of ritual atonement for samurai warriors and in modern times is a way to escape failure or save loved ones from embarrassment or financial loss.
Suicides surged by 35 percent in 1998 as Japan's economy was mired in stagnation and have exceeded 30,000 every year since then.
Group suicides make up only a small fraction of the total, but the steady annual increase, along with the widespread media coverage most get, has experts increasingly worried.
"Many people are too scared to die alone," said Yumiko Misaki, director of the Tokyo Inochi no Denwa (Phone of Life), a suicide counselling service. "So they reach each other through the Internet and make arrangements.

Hibachi Method

TOKYO - Japanese police are investigating two separate cases of suspected group suicide after nine people were found dead in parked cars, the latest in a series of such cases.
Five men and one woman were found dead in a station wagon in Saitama prefecture, just north of Tokyo, a police spokesman said.
He noted that charcoal stoves were found in the car but declined to give further details, citing ongoing investigations. The charcoal generates carbon monoxide, a poisonous gas.
Separately, a man and two women were found dead in a sealed car parked in the foothills of a mountain in Aomori prefecture, some 280 miles north of Tokyo, a police spokesman said. MORE

The number of Japanese committing suicide has been rising steadily in recent years - more than 34,000 Japanese took their own lives in 2003...
Police said last month that 91 people had died in the pacts in 2005, compared with 55 in 2004 and 34 in 2003, when the records started.

SHIZUOKA, Japan, March 15_(Kyodo) _Four people were found dead in a van at a parking lot in the city of Shizuoka on Wednesday afternoon, police said.
As the car was locked from inside and burnt charcoal was found in the car, the three men and a woman, believed to be in their 30s, apparently committed suicide together, the police said.
The police said they are still working to identify the four people, who are believed to have been dead several days.

Is there an actual published correlation between religious prohibition of suicide and suicide rates?

I cannot understand how in this day and age people still believe in religions. There mere word makes me shudder.

Suicide contagion claims 13 more

&quot wrote:THE deaths of 13 people in group suicides in the past week have reawakened fears in Japan of a new epidemic of internet death pacts.

Four people aged in their 30s were found suffocated in a car on Wednesday. Six people in their 20s were found last Friday, and three others, in their 20s and 30s, were found earlier last week.

Their deaths fit a pattern now disturbing and familiar for Japan: depressed young people getting in contact through so-called suicide matchmaker websites and arranging a catastrophic rendezvous.

Group suicides claimed 91 lives in 2005, almost double the previous year, according to an alarmed National Police Agency.

The trend points to creeping despair among young people in the world's second-biggest economy, and an acceptance of suicide as part of the cultural landscape.

Almost 90 people commit suicide in Japan each day, the highest rate in the developed world.

No particular reason has been suggested for the current wave. March and April is, however, the recruiting season for big companies and a time when university placements are announced.

Police say men and women in their 20s account for about 40 per cent of the group deaths, but that eight cases last year involved Japanese aged 10 to 19.

Internet matchmakers see what they do as a community service that allows the desperate and isolated to communicate. They do not incite suicide, they say.

But Professor Mafumi Usui, of Niigata Seiryo University, said: "Depressed young people and the internet, it's a very dangerous mix." He said websites were "the dangerous dynamic behind the recent group suicides".

The National Institute of Mental Health is trying to counteract the mood in cyberspace with its own website, called To Live.

Man, woman fall to death from Osaka condo, suicide suspected

OSAKA, April 29_(Kyodo) _A man and a woman fell to their deaths from a condominium in Osaka's Ikuno Ward on Saturday afternoon, leading police to suspect that the pair committed suicide.
The police said the two were a 29-year-old man, who lived in the 10-story condo, and his female acquaintance of about 20 years old.
Police sources speculated that the two jumped from the veranda of the man's seventh floor apartment because the door of the room was locked from the inside.

Actually the "sudden stop" doesn't hurt. The body is elastic so you bounce up about six feet and it's that second hit that hurts. Sort of like, cracking the egg and then scrambling it.
