Felt it too here in Tokyo. It was quite powerful, but only for a very short while.

You're lucky you missed it. It was surprisingly strong for only a 4. I got seriously freaked out for most of the night.

Be glad you missed it. How the hell you, and my friend, both managed to miss it is beyond me, but be glad you did.

Hey! That "little" earthquake 30 seconds ago... gr-r-r-round the Tokaido Shikansen to a stop outside Hiratsuka according to Mrs. Taro who is onboard right now. 250 km/hr to ZERO km/hr is exciting!

She's texting me from Tokaido Shikansen near your house from what I can surmise from her description (she's stopped just beyond my surf-kayaking spot at Ninomiya). They are now saying it will take up to an hour to check the tracks for severe bending.

Oh fun. I'm between Hiratsuka and Oiso. It was pretty big here.

If the tracks are buggered and she gets stuck there, she is welcome to stay with us.

Yeah, I know. It's Japan.
Back home on the ranch in Colorado, it would be rude not to stop by your house to say just "howdy" when I go kayaking.

Hey it's rude now! Just ring the door bell next time and I'll invite you in for a cuppa.

Be warned though I live on the 4th floor of an apartment building with no elevator ;)

8.1 Quake in Tonga

Postby Charles » Thu May 04, 2006 1:44 am

USGS reports a massive 8.0 quake in Tonga about an hour ago.

Pacific Tsunami Center issued a warning for Fiji and New Zealand, rating the quake at 8.1 and says they're monitoring ocean sensors to see if further alerts should be issued.

Had a fun 5:00 wake up call out here. Lots of rattling but nothing fell over. Not as bad as the 2000 quake but still a 6.1.
