Asahi: Arid Gobi Desert conditions mean blanket of sand for Japan
Yellow sand blowing into Japan from China can be a nuisance or even a health hazard, and experts warn this is shaping up as one of the worst years on record. Each spring, fine sand particles whipped up by winds in the Gobi and Taklimakan deserts sweep eastward across China, the Korean Peninsula and Japan. But this year, exceptionally arid, hot conditions in inland China throughout March have produced more sandstorms than usual in northern China--13 so far, the most since 2002. The Japan Meteorological Agency has issued four cautions about the phenomenon, known here as kosa, compared with just one last year.
