Crisscross: Capitol Tokyu Hotel to close
The Capitol Tokyu Hotel will close on Nov 30, ending 43 years of history. The hotel is being closed as part of the "Nagata-cho 2-Chome Redevelopment Plan," Tokyu said in a statement. The redevelopment plan, scheduled to be completed in 2010, will integrate office buildings and a luxury hotel that will be the flagship of the Capitol Tokyu chain, which is currently in 59 locations. During its heyday, the Capitol Tokyu, which was the Hilton until 1983, was host to some famous guests, including the Beatles, Michael Jackson and his chimp.

The obvious question is this: Where will Koizumi get his hair cut from now?

It truly is the end of an era. The shrine in front is the Sanno which gave its name to the Sanno Hotel made famous as a US Army Officer's club following the war and which included the land for the Hilton. It was located in front of where the Hilton still stands and was done away with about twenty years ago. The Sanno was a historical site as it was the former Imperial Army's Officer Club and served as the HQ for the young officers that conducted the 2.26 jikken. The only remaining building in that area of any time span (except of course, the shrine) is the Capitol Hilton. Sad to see it go, but I'm sure they will do something productive with it like turn it into a parking lot. I wouldn't hold my breath to see the classy resort and office buildings.

GB you are a wealth of information

Have you written the obligatory 'Japan' novel yet? I'd buy it.
Mr Kobayashi: First, I experienced a sort of overpowering feeling whenever I was in the room with foreigners, not to mention a powerful body odor coming from them. I don't know whether it was a sweat from the heat or a cold sweat, but I remember I was sweating whenever they were around.

Took me a while to make the connection, emperor, but I got there in the end.

Incidentally, that view of the Capitol Tokyu in the picture above is picturesque but very out of date. The hotel is now in the shadow of the Sanno Park Tower (literally so in this picture):

There used to be a Tokyo Joe's stone crab restaurant just up the road but it has closed and has now become a place called Zauo where you can fish for you dinner with a plastic rod and line.

Mainichi: Hotel where Beatles stayed in Tokyo to be demolished
The Capitol Tokyu Hotel in Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo, where the Beatles stayed in 1966, is to close on Thursday. The structure will be torn down 43 years after it opened in 1963, and a 29-story building will be constructed on the land lot. The hotel will reopen in the new building in 2010. "Our hotel wasn't the Beatles first choice," says Kenichiro Yamaguchi, 69, former deputy general manager of the hotel. "We accommodated them because an old established hotel refused to take them saying, 'We can't accommodate such a delinquent group' "...more...
