Question re: Tokyo Internet Cafes

Postby 2triky » Thu May 11, 2006 9:55 am

I'm asking this question on behalf of someone who'll be traveling to Tokyo in the near future, any information or assistance is greatly appreciated!

"Are you are permitted to attach storage devices to the USB ports of Internet Cafe Computers, for the purpose of transfering photos to and from digital cameras?"

The only place I know from experience that does not USB devices in Kinkos in Japan and Korea. Not sure about other places.

Thanks for your reply...in particular I am concerned about whether you can use your USB devices at Internet Cafe Computers, not so much whether or not USB is available...is one allowed to attach portable hard drives and such for transferring data and what not?

That's what Blah Pete meant. Kinkos do not always allow USB devices. They are expensive anyway so they probably won't be your preferred option. Most other internet cafes are also manga cafes and these places do allow devices (or, rather, they do not forbid them). If they require software that is not already on the PC, however, then you might find you are not allowed to install it.

I don't know the answer to that, but I have been to a couple of internet cafes in Tokyo before and you usually get a private booth while using the PC. I suppose you could bring your device into the booth and give it a try without someone interfering. Depending on the way the computers are set up in the booth, there may be a problem accessing the back of the hard drive to get to a USB port.
