Hello all!

I'm in the US Navy and will be going to Japan in a few months. As soon as I applied for these orders, I started looking up all that I could about Japan on the web, and as one link-led-to-another... I found FG!

Of all my sites that I visit, this is the best.

I've been to Hong Hong, Singapore, Pusan, but never Japan... and to spend several years there, instead of just a few weeks, is something that I look forward to very much.

The folks that I know, who have been stationed in Japan, say that I'll do very well there, and I think that I might have a "beginner's understanding" of what the Japanese think of our Navy... but what do the FG's in Japan think of us?

As the Zen philosopher Tigger once wrote,

That's "Airdale", gboothe, not "Airedale"! (gboothe has a ... thing for dogs)

If your first post is anything to go by, alpine_rain, I suspect you'll have a great time in Japan and appreciate the experience.

Best of luck.

Hi Freiherr Wilhelm Kaleva!

Since you're a student barron (Freiherr) you can afford Edelweiss at 900yen a bottle. Better yet, submit your your letter of intro to the address below and drink for free at the next party! ;)

Haha so thats the address where I'll ask fairly priced accomondation withing reach of everything in Tokyo. Free beer at parties sounds awesome(and vaguely familiar;)) Do they supply you with nice girls there too?

But Holy crap thats expensive beer! 900 en thats like 8 euros or something right? Still Edelweiss might be worth it, being the best beer in the universe!

Not where I live, but Tokyo is a different matter. Wheat beers can be found but are less common. My guess is that there is a good chance you should be able to find them somewhere there. In addition there are a few micro-brewerys that do brew wheat beers so you should be able to find something.:)

If you get homesick for some European beers, the internet can introduce you to sites like Michael Jackson's beerhunter.com (no, not that Michael Jackson).

BUT, if you're exploring a new country, why not let your taste buds explore some new beers?

Japan has some great local beers and a good place to start is with the tasting session that follows a tour of one of the breweries.

Enjoy.

I second that motion. I practically LIVED there for a while in the late 90s (ok, well, at least I paid Bernd a weekly visit on average). I was pleased to notice recently that it's still around, and I've been eagerly plotting my return.

Hello

Postby cerephinna » Fri Jun 16, 2006 8:54 pm

Hi

I just joined the site a few days ago.

I'm getting together all the information and opinions I can on conversation schools before I make any applications to them. I'm hoping to join a school in about 9 months time. I've been looking at Aeon, Geos, Nova and ECC. I've checked out the information on the General Union pages too.

Besides that, I like making cakes, doing paintings and designing tattoos. Oh, and going down the rock club too :)

Please don't be *too* mean to me!

Welcome. Do ya really think we're that mean!:)

If you're looking at conversation schools as a way to get introduced to the culture and have fun you'll be okay, if look at it as a job you'll probably be in trouble.

Good luck.

New here

Postby CrankyBastard » Mon Jul 03, 2006 12:25 pm

I'm a cranky bastard who came to Japan when I was working on J/flag ships in the 1960's-70's. Started taking leave here rather than fly back to the UK (the ships usually paid-off at Japanese ports.)
Got married in 197? don't remember.
Applied for and was given Pavement Resident status twenty something years ago.

I'm confused, CrankyBastard:

Were you a seaman on a J-Flag ship?

Or on ships flying the J - Flag (three horizontal bars blue, white and blue) meaning, 'I am on fire and have dangerous cargo on board: keep well clear of me'?

[/cheeky ribbing]

Welcome aboad, anyway.

Hope you can relieve (and not relive) some crankiness here.

Thanks for the welcome,Kurohinge.
I really am crankier than usual tonight, two young guys from NHK called earlier with questions about why I've stopped paying fees, I asked them in for a glass of wine. They refused. I slammed the door shut.
Now the missus is upset.
