WTF is St Jordi's Day?

Postby dimwit » Tue May 16, 2006 7:36 pm

I was just taking a look at Japanese diary/calender and a noticed that April 23rd is marked off as St Jordi's Day. St Jordi, I assume is a latanization of St. George but I don't understand why a Japanese schedule/date should have such a reference.

On St . Jordi's Day Japanese women are to give their men a book---that is, its some fake holiday cooked up by the Japanese publishing industry.

The original holiday was in April 23. According to csmonitor.com : April 23the streets of Barcelona fill with red roses and Shakespeare as the proud Catalans celebrate the feast of their patron, Sant Jordi.....300 bookstalls, festooned with the red and yellow of the Catalan flag, honor Miguel de Cervantes and William Shakespeare. Both authors died on the same day, April 23, 1616. .... "

Sort of like Orange Day I guess. My guess is that even if it were followed most men would end up getting books about relationships or communicating, rather than baseball almanacs, or sukebe anime they wanted.;)

Still can't figure it managed to find it's way from Spain to here. It seems like a bit of a reach.:-|

This looks like a Fark-esque photoshop opportunity to me! (I know some of you can make something totally funny out of this).
