For answers 1-5

1 In Toronto the CN Tower, Casa Loma, many of the building around the Univerwsity of Toronto. In Ottawa and House of Parliament, the Chateau Laurier. In Qubec city, the Chateau Frontenac. Canadians form other areas could fill you in better about Vancouver and points west.

2 The same as pets everywhere else.

3 There are a number of good Canadian soccer players but they mostly do the citizenship bugaboo and become instant Englishmen like Owen Hargraves, but generally Canadians are pretty pathetic soccer players.

4 In Toronto Jamestown, and the JAne-Finch shooting gallery standout.

5 Canada gives it name to Neil Young and the Mackenzie brothers.

Canada questions

Postby canman » Mon May 22, 2006 7:54 pm

I think the Skydome in Toronto, was one of the first retracktable roof domed stadiums in the world. In Montreal Notre Dame Basilica is very beautiful. Also Montreal's Olympic Park.

As for clothing I don't think there is a lot of difference between Japan and Canada, although when I was at home for Christmas I was surprised by the number of people with all kinds of piercings, ear, eyebrow, nose , lip. I don't think you would see as many kids running around with either real or fake brand goods in Canada as you do here.

Beautiful scenery abounds everywhere, but in particular I think Lake Louise, Lake Morain near Banff is exceptionally beautiful. As are the Laurentian Mountains in the autumn with a kaleidescope of colors from the changing leaves.

Houses in Canada have INSULATION goddammit. And central heating and basements. They are also approx. 1.5 times larger than Japanese houses from what I've read, and much cheaper to buy, and also have much higher resale value.

Canada has mandatory education until age 16, or the end of junior high, whichever comes first. Most students continue on to grade 12, and then college or university, much like Japan. The difference being 99% of Canadian post secondary schools are public and the costs are much lower than Japan.

Hope these answers help. pm me if you need any more answers.

With respect to #4, what would be considered "a dangerous place" to a Canadian? It can't take much.

I loved the scene in "Bowling for Columbine" when Michael Moore goes to Canada and just walks into people's houses to test the theory that everyone keeps their front door unlocked. I can't remember the last time I ever left a door unlocked.

In LA? Well, in Long Beach my family always leaves the door unlocked! A couple a years ago the house was burglarized by breaking in through the bedroom window----the burglar assumed the door was locked.

Michael Moore's understanding of Canada is as superficial as you get and more than a little tainted by his own idealogy.

There are a few areas in Toronto which dominated by Jamiacian gangs with lovely names like the Jamestown Crips where you'd have to be insane to feel safe. Notheless large tracts of Canada are just as safe as most area in the States.;)

Well, the quaint romanticism of it was nice. But wait, you haven't told us if you keep your front door locked or not. Was Michael Moore right in your case?

Taro, in LA I always kept my door locked. But as you said, locking your door is not necessarily going to keep thieves out of the house. Right, ultra?

I still think my avatar is a pretty fair representation of Canadian fashion.

I couldn't think of any for a long time but I suppose massively corrupt politicians would be a similiarity.

If you mean study in Japanese style, I don't think I ever studied.:) Canman however is correct in theory.:D

In both countries, curling is oddly popular.

There are no locks on the doors of my rice ranch in Shikoku and I haven't locked a door in Colorado in 35 years (my backdoor in Chicago is normally open). Here in Tokyo, my locked and bolted residences have been burglarized three times.
Conclusion: Japanese concrete causes crime.:p

1) CN Tower in Toronto, Notre-Dame Basilica, Saint Joseph Oratory and the Olympic Stadium in Montreal. Hotel Chateau Frontenac in Quebec City.

2) same as everywhere dogs and cats.

3) Soccer players in canada? I didn't know we had any.

4) Scarborough in Toronto, Jane/Finch in Toronto, Regent Park area in Toronto.

5) Canadians have no sense of style. Most people don't give a damn about brands. Japanese women dress to kill while Canadian women dress as if they were killed. Very pathetic on the fashion front. However, people tend to be more stylish in Montreal but again, nothing compared with Japanese women.

6) No similarities with Japan whatsoever. Japan outranks canada in almost any category.

7) Tonnes of beautiful scenery in canada. Lake Louise, Lake Morain, Anywhere in British Columbia or Nova Scotia. Even the Newfoundland coastline is amazing.

8) Canadian houses are much more comfortable than japanes ehouses because we have central heating and air condition (for the most part). Houses here are much larger than in Japan although the quality of construction may not be as good in Canada. Price is another factor, outside of Toronto and Vancouver where house prices are as high as in Tokyo, house prices in the rest of the country are a bargain.

9) Students study nothing here. Canadians rank always near last in every subject. One thing is people have no concept of geography here, maybe due to the fact that Canada is so big they don;t study anything else.

10) If students put in more than 5 minutes a day I'd be shocked.

Cheers,
